tomtom or PDA?
« on: November 28, 2005, 10:00:03 AM »

Hopefully will be getting tomtom5 of ebay. Have heard bad things about the tomtom hardware saying the screen and box are scrap, hence am leaning towards a PDA with 5 loaded onto it. Have looked about and some of the tomtom5 PDA i have seen on ebay dont seem to have the full version!
Could a cheaper way be to buy a cheap PDA and download a cracked tomtom5 from the likes of limewire p2p as I have seen it on there.  :-k

I've never heard that about the tomtom go.

Everyone I've spoken to who has one rates it very highly.

I know some peolpe don't like V5 of the software, and stick with V3.

I spose it's all down to choice.  Would you use a PDA for other things or just to run the tomtom software?

To be honest Chris I would only use the PDA for the GPS, but it seems the cheaper option for TT5, have seen PDA'a TT5 loaded for about £250!
The TT5 units are $400+  :-k

Don't quote me, cos I could be wrong (It's been known) but I think the TT go 300 comes with V5 of the software.  The Go 500 has extra blingy bits like bluetooth etc.  I know you can get the 300 for under ummm....300! :D

Well I saw the TT5 in action this weekend and was blown away by it, thought it was an awsome bit of kit. I didnt realise thet you could get the TT5 software seperatly, but my mate downloaded a cracked version from the net and poped it on his PDA and off it went.
Think I would rather get a legal version, but the PDA route just seems much cheaper on ebay! :?

Owen,. get the PDA... I'll PM why ;)
Also, if you get a PDA with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth GPS, you can mount the GPS right at the front of your windscreen and get a more acurate signal whereas having the GPS under the roof restricts their ability to recieve a signal as well.

Had TomTom Go 300 for about 3 months....it's excellent.

Disadvantage over a PDA....can't run other progs and you can't get an illegal copy of the software.

Advantages....quicker than a PDA to boot, doesn't crash, no need for external aerial, works off internal battery or ciggie lighter.

It's all touchscreen operation, good maps, quick calculation and auto re-routing, good voice prompts, easy to back up to computer via USB and can use downloadable POI files including free speed camera databases.

Screen is bright and clear, case seems fine so maybe someone who thinks these are (s)crap heard it from someone else who read it somewhere and hasn't actually tried it.  :D

If you leave the PDA in TomTom and just put it in standby, the PDA is quicker.
PDA is touchscreen too
PDA is easier to Sync
PDA plays MP3s
PDA (Windows Mobile) will run Memory Map.
PDA is not tied to TomTom so you can use other software too (eg. Destinator)
TT Go is HUGE compared to a PDA. it does not fit in your pocket unless you wear trewsers liek KD :)

Uses of my PDA:
Calendar - Synced to my outlook calendar
Notes - Synced
Mail (Used to use this, but not set it up again since I re-built it)
MP3 Player
Movie Player (320 x 240)
Mobile Internet
Oh, and of course... TomTom5
Memory Map
SimCity
Chess
Soduku
Some Bubble game

Ooops, this sounds harsher than it's meant :) I like my PDA :)

No, not really because if you're leaving it in standby and on TomTom then you cannot access those other progs! If you want to compare like with like, how long does it take from power off to being able to navigate? TomTom is quicker.

Yep ... forgot that.

Yep all useful stuff if you need it.

It's hardly HUGE ...I'd say the TomTom screen was big enough to be useful but not so big you cannot carry it round whereas the PDA screen is too small to be good for navigation but a worthwhile compromise if you need the rest of the stuff mentioned.

Yep, see your point and if it works for you that's fine. Me, I'd prefer to give up a MP3 player, 320x240 movies (come on...do you REALLY watch movies on your PDA and listen to them on the internal speaker/earphone??) and work with something designed for the job.

To be fair, since I re-built it suggests you not only like your PDA but know your way around its workings whereas I'm influenced by friends running satnav software on PDA's which always seem to be freezing up and needing re-boots.

Horses for courses I reckon but at least we agree the TomTom software works well!

Ah, but then I still prefer TT3.12 too :) it had "Avoids" so that you could choose to avoid areas... I think it was a mistake to remove that in the later versions :)

Re-building a PDA is as simple as taking the bettery out for 10 mins, then re-starting it... all back to defaults. Nothing technical there :)

yes, I do watch movies in 320 x 240 via reasonable quality headphones.

Screensize on the PDA is same as TTG I think. not far off if not. and the TTg is FAT! it's a good 2" deep, I wouldn't want that in my pocket! (Crude extra bit removed)

If the GPS is on and tracked, then firing up the PDA already running TT is only a few seconds. But yes, if you reset the PDA and re-load tomtom, then you wait a little while (Depends on the speed of your PDA / Memory card)

You also can't load CheckPOInt on TTG, that's useful for finding Carefours and Auchen hypermarkets and fuel stations when you're abroad too and well as a syncronising POI for Speed cameras too. (TT5 has bought some of these features, but not quite as well in my oppinion.

I bought a Dell PDA with bluetooth GPS and Dells software, to be honest It's forever 'freezing'...Is this likely to be the PDA or the software? If its the software can I put TOM TOM onto it?

Matt, pop down and we'll have a look, most likely the software, I don't have many probs with mine now (Used to with 3.12)

Do have a look and see if there is a Bluetooth fix for your PDA, pre the latest fix on the ipaq it was a bit of a "KD" when you used Bluetooth.. :)

We can try putting 5.1 on there and see, of course, you'll have to remove it again before you leave ;)

My AA map shows all the little wiggly roads, and the BIG red ones, and shows me WHERE I can get on those blue motorway thingies..went on one the other day and there were hundereds of cars all going the wrong way,so I pulled onto the side of the road and had a little kip till it quietened down again and some nice policemen gave me my own escorted drive up the road to the next turn off thingy, wasn`t that nice of them, they are coming round for a little chat soon, must pop the kettle on and get some biccies out ready..

I use a combination of 2 ways to navigate.

My son, Paul is great on the A-Z, Greggmo was calling him Tom-Tom on Sunday.

My wife, Gail is great on the large maps, gets me anywhere. Even when in the states, we did not get lost.

Only problem i have is with OS maps, Gail don't like em  :^o

SatNav is great but pricey  :)

Take advice from one who uses Sat Nav alot - use a PDA with either a bluetooth GPS or better still a CF GPS (like mine).  TomTom 5 should never be bought on an SD card - its fake :(
I use an HP2210 PDA with a SysonChip CF GPS.  Also bought a Seidio PDA holder which is hard wired into the Jeep.
However, I have an unfair advantage - my cousin owns GPS Warehouse :D  and he's now selling Ram Mounts which will fix any mobile device into vehicles like trucks, 4x4s, etc.
