Whistling windscreen - help
« on: May 22, 2011, 07:36:11 PM »

Anyone fixed a whistling windscreen on a Chief before?

Only reason im asking is after trawling google it seems it may not be the windscreen (I was hoping for a talcum powder/squeaky floorboards type fix) and what is causing the whistle could be any number of factors that seem to be specific to specific makes/models of vehicle

So before I just decide on v loud music, any ideas?

Cheers

was my guess but all sorts of weird causes on the net, an alfa 154 for instance should have 3 screws in the door mirrors but the ones made on fridays only have 2 and the wind whistles through the empty hole

and Bubba, shame on you knowin that existed  :003:

easy answer is to bungee one of the boys to the bonnet and get them to poke a finger in any holes they see till whistle goes as you drive down the road

if that is the solution i may as well go proper hillbilly and strap a deer to the bonnet (will just have to train it to seek out wind holes first)

no random fixes then?

Yes. It's caused by oxidised or matt paintwork. Just polish it to a high gloss shine and the whistling should stop....

Don't listen to him BD he's luring you down a dark and dangerous lane where there's no turning back from the shiny

Sure its not the sound of fuel getting consumed at a horrific pace by the engine?

Trying to find a wind noise can be a real challenge , it may be the windscreen , it may be something else...?

You could maybe try buying a bulk roll of duct tape and sticking it on various parts of the screen and other places until you find the noise has stopped , and then try to sort out something to stop it....

I remember my pit crew trying to sort a very high pitched whistle on a racing Porsche i was driving , it was very loud ..it must have been to be heard above the demented howl of a racing Porsche engine , and i was wearing a crash helmet....!

It turned out to be one of the air ducts that took cooling air to the brakes that was causing the racket....a bit of re shaping with a hammer....sorted...

like he says are you sure its the windscreen, you can get a lot of noise from the air rushing between the door mirrors and the side windows as well along with perished rubbers etc

Aerodynamics are a tricky thing , i was a bit involved in such trickery when i was a racing driver....

Lets assume that the good old people at Jeep did lots of testing on the Jeep before producing it for sale , part of this testing will have been to check out wind noise and reduce drag , and one would hope they got rid of any whistling caused by wind noise....

but , any item fitted to a car changes the aerodynamics , even a radio antenna , or spotlights  or a light bar will change the way the air flows over the car and can produce wind noise that was not there before...

Add to this the wear and tear that makes door seals less effective , windscreen seals less sealed , and you can have an annoying noise that can be quite hard to pin down...  My Jeep had a strange rattle , turned out it was the metal radio antenna that would only make a noise when there was a side wind...

If you are sure its the windscreen , a roll of duct tape will soon prove it ...or not... then you can set about sealing the windscreen permenantly...  but don,t be suprised if its something else....?

Agree with the folks above, the Panzer has the occasional whistle & tracked it down to the (very large) wing mirrors. Also had whistling wipers on a previous motor.

Go with the duct tape first, then you know its the screen rubber / trim  :icon_winkle:
