Recovery points - Clyro & Chief specific
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:05:00 PM »

With Clyro closing in on us and havin the stern warnin from Greggmo about the need for recovery points bein compulsory I need some advice what to do and where to do and how to do some recovery points on the Chief, which will be travelling in stock form bar some muds unless I have the red CJ sorted by then (but it may be sold anyway by then)

Pics of the front (yes I know part of it is in a bush but it looks the same as the other side) and pics of the back (ignore the black security post please) are below.

Help please, I got big plans for the Chief but nowt in the next few months so need a quick & easy solution.

Cheers

If that is a proper, strong and well mounted towbar that isn't rusted to fook then that'll do for rear recovery.

For the front, you may be able to get a recovery hook bolted into the bottom of the chassis rail with a plate inside the rail with captive nuts on. 2 M12 high tensile bolts should be enough for all but silly recovery.

I have to add that I've never seen a FSJ to see if the above is even possible, it's only based on general knowledge of Jeeps and other 4x4s.

Finally, James offers some tech advice as opposed to buffoonery from you other chumps

I think I have some tow hooks for a CJ laying around somewhere, will they do?

this is truly not taking the piss, but if your taking that to clyro you will have to take it real easy and if it rains at all leave it in the car park cos you, sorry some other poor sod will spend all day dragging your arse about all day.

Why you not going in the CJ ?

The site can be quite damaging too so be prepared  :greggmo:

If the CJ is sorted then yes will be goin in that, but its fuel injection is apart at the moment to sort its emissions for the MOT (also the winch will need wiring up and onearm seems reluctant to attempt that)

but really? Is the site that 'bad' that only heavily modified will get around ANY of it?

damage i can live with on the Chief :greggmo:

Make one, it's not rocket science :icon_eek:

By the way trailer lenses glued/screwed over the US spec tail lights was a cheapskate way to avoid buying expensive UK spec ones.

Abit like the bicycle chain bodge

ok, I got two 10000lb rated hooks, so where do I sling them? I got a pic of the Chief behind the bumper, and i front of the bumper - do I need to cut the bumper?

if you want quick and easy without doing any damage, take off the bumper and make a plate (½" x 2" x 8" should do) that bolts to the chassis where the bumper mount does and then bolt hook to the plate.

you could even make it up then refit the bumper for the journey and when you get to the site remove the bumper and fit the hook, that way you can travel in full road trim and gain a bit of extra clearance on site
