Rear light conversion?
« on: June 11, 2011, 07:21:07 PM »

Good Evening,

Would like to go away from the rectangle units and try some round ones.

I am wondering if any of you have changed the rear lights on your wranglers?

If you have what sort did you use, which make? have you sunk them into the bodywork or just mounted them on?

Really want to do this but curious about some ideas or feedback if people have tried or failed with what works and doesnt.

Any pics would be a bonus!

Many thanks..

Paul

Cool write up. Lights look good.

What make are they and may i ask where you got them?

Is your vehicle going to be off road use only or on road- what are you planning for reflectors, reverse light and fog? Or are they all intergrated?

Ive seen some lights that i like and will actually seem to do everything. Im wondering whether to sink them in flush or just mount them as they can be shallow mounted.

With them being leds did you have to buy the 'flasher' relay or did you use resistors?

Cheers

Thanks for the pic.

These are the some that ive seen

http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/Bulls_Eye_Led_All-In-One_Rear_Lamp_With_Built-In_Reflector_RL65

http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/Led_All-In-One_Rear_Lamp_With_Built-In_Reflector_RL53

http://www.iowa80.com/DirectionsWEB/webcart_productDisplay.php?itemid=195797&itemdesc=Euro+Red%2FAmber+LED+Light+S%2FT%2FT

There are others but these seem to incorparate everything i need in the pair of stop lights and 1x fog, 1x reverse ie four lamps in total.

Ideally i would get the ones that are in the states but most are red indicator style.

http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/95mm_Led_Stop_Tail_And_Indicator_Pair_RL36

These are my babies......... the indicators do 1 rear light red 2 brake light 3 centre amber indicator ....but appear white when unlit....

the light underneath on left is reversing light only....the light on right is hi viz red fog...... using resistors to control flashing frequency.....

Would be legal on road but other issues ...... large spendy rubber and lack of hand brake makes this a trailer queen.....

I had to clad rear in sheet steel 2.5mm to:  a, armour rear quarters against my inability to drive between trees.... :hysterical:
but b, to cover holes in rear caused by fuel filler and big Jeep rear lights..... you can buy rear quarter armour.... without holes for lights....but because of shipping DIY rules......

My rear panels were made(by me :icon_super:) from 1 sheet 1.5metres by 1metre of 2.5mm sheet steel cost me £35.....
and an afternoon with a big sheet of cardboard making a template :flag:

Any reason why you guys are changing from the typical rectangular TJ style ones? I have to get rear lights for my CJ6 and was initially thinking of finding some TJ ones as I spose they are a dime a dozen? and to me they look better on the Jeep as the round ones almost look out of place

Almost justifies the LED spend of mine  :icon_super:

Originals are very vulnerable which is why I sunk mine in..... (frenched)........and     ended up denting the steel around them........on a tree :jpshakehead:

don't forget carriage, duty and vat

$35 used was the cheapest i could find, carriage seems the same from most at $80, import duty at around 9%ish and vat at 20% plus handling charge (£10), I make that £140 give or take

it's always the hidden cost that kill us :icon_sad:

For me its just i fancy a change and i actually prefer the look of the way the round led's look sunk into the rear quarter.

Its definately the taxes and duty attached that are the killers.  :jpshakehead:

Maybe but it was just an idea, what about reversing lights? Not sure if they are really required or not? Was also looking at the same light but without the reversing part.
