Why can't/shouldn't 'I'?
« on: June 14, 2011, 07:43:22 PM »

was oglin the Chief today and got chattin to an ex zuk owner that was passin by, and naturally after we discussed its general all round coolness we moved on to future plans, which progressed to the the cost of lift kits from the US, and so he then said "why dont u just go with your current set up as SOA and double shocks, it's what zuks do and will be a lot cheaper than importin a lift kit"

so, without the usual head shakin and tuttin at the messenger please, why can't/shouldn't I do that wonderfully cheaper on the Chief?

Get ya spanners out, do it and let us know how it goes  :icon_biggrin:

P.S.spring perches, steering, prop angles, spring rate - it's never just about springs and shocks and the cost of a lift kit - Not saying it won't work though, YJs do it quite often I think

of course, porto tuesday  :party0036:

anyhow, back to some semblance of sensibleness, yes I will be going for 35's and that will need to be a 6" lift, was gonna go 4" lift and 3" body lift but have been advised a body lift on a truck that size will be problematic

Don't do a body lift..........just put in some alloy pucks of 1" on top of the body mounts.......... sorted
Spring overs require you to get the steering geometry correct and sort the axle wrap at the rear which you will have.....they can be done cheaper than a 4 new bling spring lift but only if you are doing the work yourself and then its about braided hoses axle mounts shock mounts shocks and u-bolts and stuff and then you need a cross over steering set up or it WILL suck. Worth doing and worth doing right cos you get compliant soft springs as they are flat......... so soft up and down............ and probably about 5" of lift or 6" if you include the bodylift alloy puck.

Go on you know it makes sense.............. now go look at Pirate 4x4 and spend till the wee small hours researching and viewing you tube footage.......... you know you want to :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_super:

a SOA will not give you any extra spring articulation just extra clearance due to the acquired lift

really only interested if its a cheaper option, im gettin impatient to lift  :003:  was just curious as to whether it was even an option

there is a 4x4 place the Kent lot use a lot (apparently 'Mudsport' do "From a simple service to a fully tricked up challenge truck, our experienced team can offer you the complete service to make your vehicle a pleasure to drive on and off road") so perhaps I will drive over friday and have a faintin attack when they tell me the price  :003:

you can do what you want to a truck but it all depends on how much fluff you have in your pocket at the time. do it cheap and wrong and you will end up replacing components sooner or for the correct way which you realise you should have done in the first place. Lose some days on pirate4x4 and see what people have done given the lift the have fitted to their truck and tyre size. the bigger you go shows the limitations with the origional equipment fitted.

6" lift is gonna be minimum £1200 to the door, plus fitting (and im not sure MJS wont buckle under the strain of an constnt flow of old iron), and that is using rustys who dont have the greatest rep for bein reliable, so options have to be investigated

Have you priced up having leaf springs made in this country?

Take a stock spring for dimensions ad tell them you want an extra XX kg weight carrying capacity and more arch to give 6" lift.

It's got to be better than paying $$ to ship heavy springs across the Atlantic and something I've been thinking about when it comes to heavy metal parts.

I did that with my XJ,just had longer heavier duty springs made and was about the same price as buying normal springs
