3.1 td lack of power
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:05:22 PM »

Hello all first post on the site.

Just looking for little help have a just bought 3.1 td grand cherokee and feels like there is lack of top end power 0-45,50  is great but anything above that takes a while to climb to. Anything more than half throttle doesnt make a difference to speed or revs maxes out at 2500 could this be a turbo issue? doesnt feel like there is much of a kick down either. It does climb to max out at 85mph

Hope someone can shed some light on this

Thank you for any help or suggestions

might be turbo or air intake

if you have not changed the air filter its probably due a change anyway.

It could be in a limp home mode as well

I am also having something similar on the same engine,

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee, it is almost like it is in limp home mode, but will eventually pick up, I had this a few days after I bought it and the dealer replaced a sensor. after that the engine temperature gauge didn't work but it ran fine, now its doing it again, 6 weeks later, put your foot down sometimes and it wont go, then it picks up and you are off, sometimes not!

So, I have had a good look around, the in car self diagnostics showed engine temp to high so I thought I would check the sensor on the side of the block, the cable came out in my hand, once repaired the gauge worked again, the engine seems to run just under the 100 mark, I would have thought that to be right, I also found a spring off underneath the Jeep in the linkage section near the gearbox, it was the return on the throttle, again, spring refitted and no difference. I have had a look inside the ECU (dont panic I have a background in electronics) and checked for dry joints, again, no luck.  :banghead:

My question is, I have read that there are two engine temp sensors on this engine (currently downloading the parts manual) where is the other one? as i understand that one is for the gauge and one is for the engine management I had the code P0118 show up but that has gone, will check it again when I come back from work.

Thanks in advance for your help, I hope that's enough to be going on with?

Nigel.

Loose or split Turbo & inercooler pipes can cause these symptoms

can you see the broken pipes or are they something inside that is not visible? will get underneath again tonight an have a look around.

to explain again a bit  more and this might be different to the OP it is a bit like the throttle does not work until it hits the kickdown part and then only sometimes, if you floor it all the time the engine will slowly pick up and eventually rev high. the turbo kicks in and you can feel the pull and hear a slight whistle.

Thanks Dave69, have had a good look and cant see anything collapsing, I am guessing you mean the flexible hose that runs from the front to the turbo about 3 inches in diameter? that feels as if it will keep its shape, you can push it together under the strength of you hand, but no more that the one on the other side of the engine.

will keep looking for something that does not look right.

There may not be anything wrong with it. I seem to remember, when the 3.1 came out for 2000 model year the went ok, but later on for '01 they model year Chrysler remapped the Bosch controller for better MPG, resulting in them being flat as a pancake at full throttle/higher RPM.

Hi, no, its not like that, you can tell as it pulls when its okay and doesn't when it is playing up.

Okay, found the fault, and it was not showing up in the fault list, but somebody who worked at a Jeep dealer suggested I look there, I hope it helps others. There are two temperature sensors on the engine, the one to the front sends a signal to the gauge and will bring up the 0118 code, the one to the rear does something else and does not show a code, I have rewired the connection, tightened the connectors within the connector, extended the loom (just for ease) and off we go again.

I just found it strange that when disconnected it didnt show up in the fault code list, I just got the standard 'done'

I hope this helps others.
