Which engine is best for Jeep Liberty?
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:33:18 PM »

My old XJ finally ran out of steam and went to the scrappers, so now I'm on the hunt for another one. I've got around 5 grand to spend on a Cherokee, but they seem to come with various options. The petrol is too thirsty for a daily driver so it'll have to be a diseasal. I've seen 2.5 2.7 and 2.8 engines so far, but which is best? I presume the 2.5 is the VM unit, but what about the others?

I lot of modern diesels seem to have problems with dual mass fly wheels, is this common with Jeeps too?

When I looked at buying a KJ a few years ago, I was advised to avoid the 2.5crd due to problems with the injectors.  Corrosion prevents them being easily replaced.

Known problems with the KJ are ball joints frequently need replacing.  The IFS makes it difficult and expensive to mod for serious offroad use.

The 2.8crd was sold in the USA, so service manuals and parts can be got hold of.

The 2.8crd is available in manual or auto.  The auto has the option of full time 4wd, which makes it a great road Jeep on wet and icy roads.  The 'lowered' suspension makes for great on road handling, although some extra skid plates will be required for any minor offroading.  I owned mine for 2.5 years, and only got rid since I wanted a JKU for intermediate offroading.

I wouldn't expect to pay more than £5k for a 2005 2.8crd auto in good condition from a trader.

Diesel, get the 2.8, petrol get the 3.7.

The 2.7 is a merc diesel only fitted in grand cherokees.

That makes sense.. I found a Liberty on auto trader that was listed as a 2.7, but could only find the one. must have been a typo.
