2005 WG Grand Cherokee CRD gearbox
« on: July 01, 2011, 09:10:03 AM »

I've noticed a strange characteristic on my recently purchased Grand Cherokee.
The gearbox seems to hold in gear far too long, doesn't change up as soon as any previous auto cars I've owned.
Won't change into 5th until about 45mph which can't help the fuel economy and feels like it's driving through treacle, it also changes down when the cruise control is on to maintain speed going down hill, very useful when the caravan is hitched up but quite odd.

Can anyone explain if this is normal or any possible causes?

Cheers

Hello & welcome,

First of all the 2.7 CRD is not the 'nippiest' jeep in the range (as opposed to the V8 for instance)

Changing up into 5th @ abt 45 is correct

Yes and it will change down going downhill and use the engine as a brake.  The cruise
will stick to the preset speed whatever the circumstances.  Uphill you'll find that it will
change down as well (if heavelily loaded or towing) to stick to same preset speed.

In short the tank will just keep going  :icon_biggrin:

Very annoying when the euroboxes creep by you on the flat and drop back going up a hill.
The times I've been cursing those wankers ....... :jump_125:

Dutch is right. A Jeep isn't a car - it's meant for driving up and down hills, through mud, and over rocks.
The auto box is programmed a bit differently. Perfectly normal.
