Mopar subwoofer for 2003-04 Cherokee/Liberty
« on: July 19, 2011, 05:53:22 AM »

I see from the Mopar accessory catalogue that they do a subwoofer for the Cherokee that fits under the left hand front seat. But apparently the additional wiring harness needed to connect it in a 2003 or 2004 Cherokee (part number 82208080) is no longer available. Has anyone ever fitted one of these subwoofers to a 03 or 04 Cherokee (or Liberty) and if so, why is this additional wiring needed and would it be easily replicated?

I wouldn't bother with an under seat sub. Way to small to do much.

I've just taken the sub out of my JK, and haven't noticed any difference to the sound, and gained some extra boot space as well  :icon_super:

Will be keeping it so I can reinstall it before I sell (if at all) the JK, since it comes as standard.

Unless the 03 Liberty is different (to the 05 model), the rear seat bed base lowers to the floor when the back is dropped, so it would have to be a very thin sub to fit there.  Also, won't the seat foam absorb the sound?

I guess I can take it from your replies, guys, that you haven't actually fitted the sub to the 03/04 Cherokee/Liberty and therefore don't know anything about the extra cabling required?

Thanks, IoM, I've PM'd you about this.

tim_aka_tim, thanks for the illustration. You're sure that's the additional cable 82208080 and not the one that comes with the sub? It would appear that it slots in between the head unit and the speaker plug and the CD changer plug, the latter presumably to get the power feed, but have you any idea what the third connector is that doesn't have a corresponding socket for pass through? Mind you as I have an iPod adapter hooked in behind the head unit and am planning to fit a Bluetooth handsfree which needs an ISO adapter cable, I may well run out of space behind the dash!

Thanks, guys

It's hard to work out exactly how it works but I guess it has a built in speaker and can be fixed to the sun visor (or somewhere). I have a Nokia one that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket which isn't bad but just fancied one wired in through the front speakers.

NB will qualify this better than me but you can BT all the units together - for the moooolar it's value.

As it happens I've just bought a s/hand Parrot kit on fleaBay and pick it up when I'm home next week. Remains to be seen how easy it is to fit with the extra cabling it requires to connect to the head unit, but it only cost thirty quid so worth a gamble. Something to keep me amused for an evening or two and out of the pubs in Pristina!

No, that's the one that comes with it. From what I can see, you're pretty screwed, and need that adapter
that they don't make. Bugger.

Blaupunkt make an under seat subwoofer that you can just splice into the stereo wiring loom.

if you have issues with the parrot (forgetting pairing, dropping connection etc) go to the parrot web site and get the correct firmware for the phone you are using, most are easy to update just download the file via your pc and copy to the root of a usb memory stick depending on the model it should plug into the parrot direct or through a A-B adaptor and follow the on screen instructions. parrots are good but you must use the correct firmware for your phone

Well, some more hunting with that nice Mr. Google would suggest that the 'adapter wedge' isn't cabling but rather some sort of device (a wedge, perhaps?) to secure the connection of the cabling that comes with the sub to the 03/4 head unit. It's hard to imagine what on earth it could be, or where it goes and I doubt if my dealer will let me order up a sub to play around with and then return it if I can't get it to fit!

So does anyone know what the difference is between the 2002 head unit and the 2003/04 one as the sub is only intended for those three model years and needs the wedge for 03/04.

And thanks for the suggestions re BT kits. As I said, I've got a used one on fleaBay and I'll have a go at installing it when I get back from my trip home. I'm sure if I run into problems, there's going to be someone here who can help.

The difference is the wiring for the cigar lighter, where the sub gets it's power from.

Indeed, that seems to be the case. More help from Mr. Google located the installation instructions for the subwoofer (isn't the internet amazing?) which indicate that the 2002 Liberty/Cherokee has two 12V sockets (one cigar lighter and one accessory socket) in the recess below the radio whereas the 2003/04 model only has one. The power supply for the sub is connected inline to the power to the accessory socket. The single socket in the later vehicle is a cigar lighter socket and in the US it is a different size to the accessory socket. It's slightly smaller which presumably explains the need for an adapter wedge to keep the cable plug tightly connected to the back of the smaller socket. But the interesting thing is that in Europe the standard cigarette lighter socket is apparently the same size as the US accessory socket which would suggest that the adapter wedge isn't actually needed on a European 2003/04 Cherokee. So I'm seriously tempted to get my dealer to order one in for me. They've quoted about £165 incl VAT. Expensive, but my iPod adapter cost me £120! And it is a neat looking installation.  :greggmo: And if it's only a matter of ensuring a sound power connection behind the cigarette lighter I'm sure that this can be achieved one way or another if my hypothesis about socket sizes is incorrect.

if you are looking for some serious bass then i would not look at the factory system it won't put out that much,if you want a better sound then go to a specialist audio shop like bass junkies and you will get a lot more for your money.

Well, I took the plunge and picked up a subwoofer when I was back home last week and spent a very pleasant couple of hours hours today installing it and a Parrot bluetooth hands free kit. The power supply connected just fine to the rear of the cigarette lighter, confirming my suspicion that the 'adapter wedge' is only needed in a US spec vehicle with the smaller cigar lighter socket. The wiring installation was absolutely straightforward, complicated only by me installing the Parrot kit at the same time which required some ISO adapter leads. So there was a lot of cabling to stow in behind the radio and the face plate. But there's quite a bit of space either side of the radio and I was able to tuck the bluetooth box and assorted cabling into the left hand side and my USASpec iPod adapter and its cabling into the right hand side. The extra cabling for the subwoofer took a bit of fiddling as it had to be routed down below the radio housing and behind the gearbox trim to get to the subwoofer under the passenger seat. But it all fitted in eventually. Here are some pictures of the subwoofer in its mounting frame before fitting and then a view of the completed installation.

[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3]

So how does it sound? Well, it certainly provides a much fuller sound than the standard setup and there's now more bass available than I'd ever be likely to want or need. So I'd say it was well worth it from my point of view. YMMV of course! But I wouldn't fancy it in a LHD vehicle as it's fixed to the frame of the left hand seat and there's a very noticeable bass thump, thump coming through the seat frame which I would find quite irritating. Interestingly my Volvo has twin subwoofers located behind the rear seat backs but there's a switch in the rear for back seat passengers to turn them off. I suspect Mrs. J might be looking for the same in the Jeep next time we take a long trip in it!
