hope this helps, look about 80% down the thread for a pic of the rear drum assembly. I can't see a spacer in it but I would think if you have the driveshaft in place you should be able to mock up the thing completly to check positioning

Dont know what the spacer you are talking about is? but the brake backing plate goes on first then the retaining part if you look the retainer has a smaller hole than the brake drum backing plate to seat up against the outer axle seal.
If the axle was built up you should be able to undo the six bolts and take the smaller retaining plate off, put a couple of bolts back in and then you should be able to get the entire drive shaft out complete with the outer seal and leave the brake backing plate in place without dismantling any of the drum brake parts.
Ive never tried it but thats what it is designed to do.

The spicer workshop manual is here but the photos are not very good.

 Hi Dave
problem is side ways movement when assembled as I thought it came off. That being D shaper spacer ,drum backing plate and smaller D plate retainer ring.
Disassembly is as you say,no mention of disconnecting brake line so assuming spacer and backplate stay on end of axle.Very confusing and don`t want to ruin yet another set of bearings.

I am sure that there is no spacer between the backing plate and the axle tube on the D44s that i have. Is the bearing too tight or too loose?

 Hi guys
Spacer is approximately 3mm thick.D shaped and with an internal hole large enough for bearing and seal to pass through.Looked at paint marks on backplate to matchup sizes and it seems to be spacer, backplate, retainer. If I reverse spacer and backplate then nothing has changed on side ways movement,I have built it up with out backplate as I`am running a home brewed disc conversion, which has if I`m honest not run smoothly  I think down to trying to space to what I thought was original distance. But still confused as I have only ever had the one back axle so spacer must have come off of it ,was wondering if one possibility is that the original bearing and seal where thicker ?[img]

post some pics if you can but it sounds like the spacer needs taking out to me and you just need to use the backplate and retainer, that should squeeze the bearing up another 3mm and hopefully get rid of the play.
Plus if you have replaced the bearing and retaining ring, are you sure they are both fully home, they do take a fair bit of force to seat them properly?
