Removing ignition key when auto transmission in drive?
« on: August 04, 2011, 10:49:14 AM »

I want to be able to access the area behind the radio in my 2004 2.8 CRD to install a bluetooth kit (and my new Mopar subwoofer!) and it would be much more convenient if I could keep the auto gear shift in low gear to give me maximum room to work. But to do that I need the ignition turned on and consequently the door alarm chime stays on when the door is open. Is there any way either to move the gear lever without the ignition being on (my Volvo has a button that can be pressed to allow the gear lever to be moved without the ignition being on) or else any way to remove the ignition key to shut off the door chime?

Isn't there a switch in the front door pillar that tells the car that the door is open or something.

Wedge a bit of wood in there or tape over, job done.  Pull a fuse ?

or am I talking bollocks

There is a way of disabling the door open / key in chime on the KJ, a series of various button presses, lever moves and alignment of planets etc. I'll have a look for the info.

Or you could do what Dutch says...

Hmm I cant find it.

Theres no pin in the door frame to push closed. You'll need to "lock" the door catch, pencil seems to be the most common way.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I had had a quick look myself and couldn't find the usual switch in the door frame so was looking for some way of moving the gear lever without the ignition being on but it doesn't seem to be possible so it looks like it's the pencil in the door lock trick!

any reason why you cant disconnect the battery? you are probably removing power from radio anyway to fit the bluetooth so radio code is not an issue

Yeah, I'd been coming round to that conclusion myself but need to check I have the radio code first.

Turns out that the it's only the driver's door that has a persistent chime if the key is in the ignition - if the passenger door is open it chimes three times and then stops!
