WJ CRD Front End Drone
« on: August 16, 2011, 07:37:59 PM »

Hi All,

Over the last month I have had a drone from the front end, it starts very low from around 15mph then gets worse as the speed goes up, at around 50-55 mph its very loud, then it starts to drop to a low drone at around 75-85mph. I have worked out it goes up with speed and not rpm and does it all the time whether you are on the gas or lifting off, I have even put the Jeep in neutral and rolled and the sound is just the same.

At 1st it sounded like a wheel bearing as I am sure the sound is coming from the front driver side, so I replaced the wheel bearing but the drone is still there, but after changing the wheel bearing I am now getting a clunk/twang from the drivers side when I turn left or right but it don't do it all time and is quiet on full lock when doing a figure of 8, but it cluck/twang when go to put it on opposite lock and go round the other way and sometimes I can feel it through the floor. I also removed the bearing the making sure everything was tight and clean, which it was, I have also changed the diff oil and the sound is still the same.

Mileage is now at 140k and has full service history, any Ideas or is the diff gone ?

Cheers

Take the front propshaft off.

I did think that, but will the diff etc still rotate and create the same sound.

Sorry if I am asking silly things but I know nothing about Jeeps :(

More likely to be the front prop than the diff

Either diff bearings, the other wheel bearing or maybe the CV joints.

Did you check the CVs when you did the bearing.

Any play in the front diff (twist in the input yoke)

Hi,

The sound does sound like its coming from the front drivers side but sound can travel, I do now have a clicking sound coming from the the drivers side after I changed the wheel bearing when I turn but there is no clonking on full lock, but when I go to the opposite lock I get a twang/clonk.

I didn't check the CV's but the Jeep has just had an MOT and they did pick up any splits etc.

I just checked the input yoke and there is about 10mm play when you twist it before it picks up.

Are the diff bearing hard to change ?

Cheers
