Just want your recommendations on this kit as im looking at ditching the nasty drum brakes at the rear. Has nayone done this mod and did you get any nasties?

they look just like the std set up on a ZJ. might be worth checking for sure as would be loads cheaper to get parts from a breaker

Get rid of those pesky drum brakes once and for all

You'll want it for a Dana44 not sure there would be mucho differance at the the axles ends from 44? Grown up will put me right....

Fook me that lot looks 'spensive, my mindy is 44's front and rear and came from the factory with drums. I have converted both axles to disc for a LOT less than these kits. Photo's are needed of your axles. I may have the answer

He''s just done a rear disk conversion on his xj.using ZJ parts cost £200 i think
had fun bleeding them. as some how got an air lock some were.

yes seen the set up the bleeding problem was down to the orientation of nipples mm nipples nipples uhm yes they were at the bottom of caliper so needed to be realeased from axle to bleed so that nipple could be at top they were never going to bleed on the axle..............does the nippple nipple sit at lowest point on a zj ??

warp is there a reason the left hand caliper could not have been fitted to the opposite side as that would have resulted in the nipple nipple on the top of calliper in the best location for bleeding

Sure I've posted this before.......but here's Stu -Offroad and a disc conversion for a TJ with Dana 35 so tis the same bits for a 44......
As said bits from a ZJ and a few parts........... tis what I did............ Works well brakes stay cleaner but are not gob smackingly better......... maybe that is 35s tho

zj calipers have the nipples at the top

I'm with Alan on this one.

The Mindy front conversion only cost £100 or so.

Develop your own conversion, it's not rocket science

i think previous arguments against home grown was that if ya unfortunate to cause a big accident and plod/insurers come inspecting ya havent got the fall back of manufacturer etc

i fitted an SSBC kit on my red truck.

It is expensive but makes a dramatic increase in your brakes, oh and i have a handbrake too

Trouble with the insurance boys is that if a big one happens then any tiny little thing that deviates from how the Jeep 'came out of the box' is going to give the bastards an excuse to walk away under the modified but not disclosed at time of insurance.......

Never stopped me though

But I'm glad it's over and I don't have to jump tho those hoops each year

Another option is to use VW rear calipers, handbrake works on the pads not on shoes inside the disc

Got an engineers inspection report as a previous insurer insisted on it. That means its been proven to be up to the job. So the 'surance robbers can

Rover/MGF calipers also work. I think Mazda 6 discs also fit. A friend did a kit using these bits with a total cost under of about £100 from memory.

The hand brake ratchet mechanism in the WV calper is prone to failure as it seizes due to water ingress .
not good for off roading

the vw caliper does seize quite easily but its fairly easy to overcome if you take it apart and grease with copper grease. ( that can be a fiddly job in itself)

I have templates for anyone who would like to fab, thier own bracketry to make a kit up using Volkswagen Golf calipers? Bracket templates are from the SSBC stuff

I got ZJ bracketry, calipers, discs and stuff 2nd hand and am thinking about getting some king of adaptors made to fit vw calipers, possibly Transporter ones as Mike Cuff has done. Fixing seized calipers isn't exactly alien to a Jeep owner so that won't put me off VW components - Ze Germans have to be respected for their manufacturing quality.

Don`t know if anybody read the article in JP , basic idea was some Isuzu troopers had Dana 44 rear axle with disc brakes.Wonder if they where used over here? If so pure bolt on .
