Ignition switch heeeeelp
« on: December 22, 2005, 10:22:32 AM »

98 Grand Cherokee

I am soooo not happy atm, had hand controls fitted yesterday, went out for the first time this morning to a hospital apt I've been waiting 6 MONTHS for. Get to the carpark turn off...key won't come out.
No amount of start/stop putting gearshift in and out of park/N/D will allow me to turn to key around enough to get it out.
I can only assume the people who did the hand controls yesterday did something or forgot to put something back or knocked something.
I'm back at home atm totally pissed off, hanes manual has no information about how the gearshift locks the key and I don't have any torx drivers to get the cowel off.

When I press the button in on the side of the gearshift I can hear movement behind near the ignition switch, is this electrical (solonoid) or a cable lock? or is there a switch on the gearbox somewhere that does the lock/release??

Just in case it's something obvious I have the RAC turning up soon, least he should have a torx driver that fits. Otherwise it's off to the stealers as I cannot be without my Jeep all xmas being disabled :(

Any clues?

I would take it back to the guys who fitted the hand controls as it seems they are to blame! If they have broke summat, its down to them to fix it!

Well, phoned the dealer and took it down, have to say the guy was a diamond. Came out and looked, I explained what I'd had done and he checked around and found the cable release ont he gearshift that links up to the ignition switch had been cought behind one of the hand control fittings and squashed.
He released it and all's well, didn't charge me either :)

I'll speak to the hand control people later on or tomorow as I'm still rather pissed off atm, and have a bloody good moan.

Te guy said he had the key in and out a lot, but of course as he never took it out of park which would pull the cable then if put back in park the cable can't retract and no key release, simple step he could of done and saved me a fkin awful morning running around and missing my apt.

Going to go and find some puppies to kick or some nuns to run over to release some frustration.

All the Best
