So I'm at the stage of purchasing a radiator fan (electric) I was originally planning on running a single 16" fan however upon further measurement the new radiator core size is only 15 5/8" tall (24" + wide) therefore not giving enough room for the 16" fan. So do I get the 16" fan and have it sit proud of the core (i.e. sitting slightly on the top and bottom tanks) or do I go for a 14" fan or a twin 12" setup.

I want opinions on the options proposed.

Also on mounting methods, most of the fans come with the (through the radiator) clips, now I have run these in the past on my race cars but upon further research have found that they will over time wreck the radiator. Is this true? Again opinions welcomed.

I was also thinking of fabricating up a aluminium radiator shroud to suit the fan I purchase, I would allow the same spacing off the rad as the fan (approx 2.5") again is this necessary or a little over the top.

With living in Ireland we don't see the nice warm summer temperatures of say the US so it may be a overkill with such a big radiator.

why not go with the original viscus fan? less prone to damage if you intend to off road it through water and as you say you don'r need mega cooling why spend the money if its not needed

That would be ok if I had the parts but I don't and by the time I source them all it would be much more than any electric setup, I also like the ability to switch off the fan if you go through deep mud as it stops the shit being flung around the engine bay. It was a common setup back home on our Jeeps.

smaller twin fan set up which allows you to run one 90% of the time and leaves the other for additional coling when sat still and the engine creating heat soak.

a fan shroud creates a draw over the whole radiator which improves the cooling ability of the fan, no shroud and the cooling efficiency is reduced.

most modern fans have a twin stat so they run constant all the time and increase in speed when they hit a preset temperature, big amps though.

the size of the fan itself is important but the cubic flow given by the fan is crucial. the more flow the more cooling ability, the shape of the fan blades dictate the amount so no two fans of the same size would shift the same amount of air.

Points taken but I'm lost on your last comment regarding the 2 fans and air shift, the fans I'mm lookingat can shift 1600CFM apparently each?

normally a single fan is positioned in the centre of the radiator and with a bespoke shroud moving x amount of air.
a twin setup normally consists of a cooling fan and the other to cover air con duties. a twin setup can potentially double the potential airflow through the radiator with both running constantly and if fitted with an adjustable twin stat you can set one fan to work at a higher speed when 100 deg is reached and the other to work at 105 deg plus.

I would go with one big fan.
ie the ford torus fan know as a ford Mondeo st220

but saying for the dimension of your rad ford V6 probe twin fan unit may do the job.

Probably really nice fans but I bet I don't have enough room between the rad and the waterpump pulley.

So here is what i did,



Twin 12" 1750 CFM each

It covers more surface area than the of a 16" fan and has more combined airflow than a single 16" fan, also means if one fan craps itself atleast there is another to back it up

Funny, I was always told the fans work better as pullers than pushers as the natural air flow is less restricted than having the fan on the input side, however the whole set cost £46 so it was worth while, I have aslo brought an adjustable thermo switch to control them which I think was £30.

Dont know how your radiator measures against a standard CJ7 one,but when i had mine i fitted a pair from a Focus Diesel

A shroud helps massively and fans on the back are much more efficient. Facelift XJ electric fans shift a lot of air and come with the shroud. Not much good now you've got yours and I'm not sure how they fit your rad but maybe a useful bit of info for someone else.

£76 is the sort of money I'd be quite happy to pay for something that does the the job, and is brand spanking new.

Better IMHO than buggering about with bits off scrappers which are 10-15 years old already, are gonna self destruct at the most inconvenient moment, and are gonna be a pig to track down an identical part to replace them.
