I-6 fan clutch & over cooling
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:30:03 PM »

Do these things fail connected? (ie always driving?)

The WJ has been running cooler recently, and seems to be getting a bit colder recently and a bit of a drop in mpg, wondering if it is not warming up correctly. The temp gauge is sitting at about 80C (well around 10 o'clock on the gauge) it used to be rock solid on the 12 o'clock position. The water pump & 'stat were changed last year with no issues after, temp was the normal 95-100C mark (12 o'clock). And the 'lecy fan relay has been changed, that is running as expected.

Suggestions peeps?

Yeah yeah, just depends how accurate the gauge is, plus are they rated at the fully open temp or the temp it starts opening??  I am wondering if I have been given an 82C one and need an 88 or higher?

In answer to your original question, yes. When cold you should be able to spin it by hand (with a bit of resistance) but over about 105C it should lock up.

80c is normal temp for most engines, could have been faulty water temp sencor, but if i was running at 90 to 100 i would have worries,
