Hi,
Struggling to resist another Jeep (4.0 XJ sold 8 months ago)! I've just test driven a WJ 4.7 V8 locally (V plate -83k miles). In normal driving there's a relatively constant clicking noise from under the car that seems to go under hard acceleration. It doesn't seem to be present whilst turning at low speed or whilst doing slow circles. I tested the transfer box on gravel and all seemed to engage OK - other than whilst rolling in neutral (transfer box) and drive (gearbox) which resulted in a fairly horrible grinding/whirring noise (loose chain? - see below)!
So... I've done some 'net research and wonder whether this might be a ruined transfer box or loose chain - or 1 (or more) CVs on the way out (or a horrible combination of everything!) Interestingly the old MoTs did show front nearside and offside CV boots to be deteriorated (advisory). If it makes any odds it looks as though it has towed a caravan at some point in life.
Otherwise the car seemed in good order - other than wanting an oil change. It is a cheap PX disposal (<£1000) - hence tempting. Whilst I'm thinking about it - are there any head-gasket issues with the 4.7 - I seem to remember reading something previously. This one has a small amount of mayo around the base of the cap - but it was doing next-to-no mileage....
Can anyone offer any thoughts or suggestions - i.e. DIY or garage jobs / rough cost? Is this worth bothering with or likely to be a massive money pit (relatively;-))?
Cheers, Tim
