WJ towbar electrics....
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:14:51 AM »

Hi, I need to replace the main 7 pin socket on my Jeep as its damaged, so finally got the bolts out to find more wires than I was expecting!
There are all the usual plain colours wires to the pins, but there are also 3 wires to a micro switch which works when you plug the socket in.
the colours on these are white, white with green trace and blue with red trace,
tried searching for a wiring diagram but only comes up with US ones which are different, this is a proper Jeep supplied towbar,
I'm quessing they are fog lights and reversing lights but have read things about it needing relays to work properly if anyone can shed some light on
how things are wired up this would be great.
thanks

Whats broken the actual plastic socket/housing?
You may be able to graft the internals with switch into a new non switched std. 7pin housing with some mods.
I've never seen aftermarket plug sockets with the switch prep.
Or mount the switch out the socket, cut the old socket off & just terminate the new one to match like for like & seperately actuate the switch.
I know from a bitter experience that Jeep no longer sell the 7pin kits; now only selling the Euro (12? pin ones) which need an adaptor; full loom is about £120.
Not sure how much effect the switch has- think it turns off the rear fogs & supposedly is linked to the ECU for shift pattern etc.

good idea about making up a separate switch and using a standard socket.
looks to be the cheapest option to get things working again.
will have another look at the original socket now its off the car to see if it can be repaired somehow.
thanks for the help.

found this on tow sure website
http://www.towsure.com/product/12N_Towbar_7Pin_Socket_with_Foglight_CutOut_Black
it may be what your looking for
the other option is that you could fit a switch hidden behind the bumper that you flick on when you connect the trailer

update...........
finally had some time off work to sort it, turns out the micro switch doubles the speed of the indicators
mounted a switch on the panel on the passenger side near were the towbar electrics are plugged in.
