cast ally

you can weld it but it does really depend on what country is was cast, how old it is and what it has been subjected to.

far east stuff is crap and very porus so the weld (tig) will normally blow straight through,

old cast ally is normally porous and crap

if it's been around oil and grease which has been absorbed then this will blow out when welded resulting in very poor or no welds.

brazing can be done but it's not easy

can you drill and bolt a cover plate over the hole ?

I've used a specialist welder in B'Ham before for work- they weld while you wait but its not cheap.
But as above comments when it comes to ally- I spent a day there once trying to get some studs welded to an ally extrusion for a prototype; trouble was the ally had been 'ruined' by atempts to weld in house. ABR got it in the end but I dread to think at what cost.
While I was there as well as the usual tools coming in one guy brought an old style cast radiator for repair; so they will weld anything!

Quick Q on the 8274; the drum capacity is 125ft. Do you all go for a rope this long or just have 100ft?
Thinking of getting Amsteel Blue 5/16"x125' for $203 from Masterpull
