WJ Steering Problem
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:29:31 AM »

HELP

In the last week the WJ has lost some of its lock when turning the wheel to the left.
From centre the steering wheel rotates 1 3/4 turns to the right but only 3/4 of a turn to the left
Any Ideas

jack up the front & get under it while someone is turning the steering (engine off!). See if anything binds. 1st suspect will be the steering damper, is it dented? disconnect 1 end of it and try the steering again. Next up is the steering box, disconnect the drag link from the box and try the steering out.

Hopefully its just a bent steering damper, about £40 to fix

If you disconnect the drag link dont waz the steering wheel around, although its good fun it will break the clockspring, not cheap to replace..  :icon_redface:

So finally got the Jeep on the ramp and checked the steering out ,
Seems i have a major issue with the streeing box( Theres a very loud bang/clunck) when going from right lock to left
Are these boxes all the same on the WJ or are they engine percific

where can i get a second hand replacement

cheers GUYS

If they are all the same send Carlos Fandangos a message or send me one and I can contact him. He breaks WJ's and normally has a good supply of parts that he will post out.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for it?
Is it a slavage or reman unit?

I've just had the steering looked at on my jeep and it seems the steering box has play and is 'clunking' so chances are it needs replacing...... :jpshakehead:

I didnt get it off him in the end as i screwed up payment and ended up getting a salvage unit from down the road for £150
Hit him up as he was charging £120 but you will need to send your old unit first,
Its quite and easy part to change but you will need a breaker bar to get the fixing bolts off, i also had to cut the arm off as i couldnt seoerate the ball joint .

hope this helps
