Wheels nuts - Steel / alloy
« on: November 12, 2011, 09:30:36 AM »

I've got an XJ sport with OE steel wheels. After a trip to get some new boots, it came back with 4 wheel nuts on each wheel rather than five (turns out it had lock nuts hiding under a chrome caps!)

I'm just going to order another 4 nuts, but I realised that most Cherokee's had alloys so I guess the cheap-arse locking nuts will be for those. Is the taper the same for steel and alloy or will I need a specific nut?

if i remember correctly you can get away with using alloy tapered nuts on steel but not the other way around.

DON'T use steel wheel nuts on alloy rims....1 the angle face is wrong and most likely smaller in size.......2 you will encounter galvanic corrosion between the two dissimilar metals which the alloy will come off worse resulting in a scrap rim

the wheel nut should hard chromed or have a captivated rotating washer (these are normally fitted with alloys).

Jeep use the same 1/2"-20 60 degree taper wheel nuts for both alloys and steel wheels.

My old (non branded) nuts had the chrome flaking off them after a couple of years on the Jeep so I decided to replace them with McGard wheel nuts. The only way to buy these seemed to be expensive and also hard to come by in 1/2"-20. I ended up shipping a pack of 100 in from the US with other stuff. I've just not got round to figuring out how much they cost me and what I'd sell them for to recoup some money. I was thinking it'd be around £3 each. They're to fit a 3/4" socket.

Cool - Do you know if they open to the public? I'm out Wymondham way quite often.

edit:

Oops - Didn't realise that the 01953 code was quite so large! Stretches near the wilds of Suffolk ;)

Just go to a local breaker, there's bound to be a rotten XJ or ZG there.

The McGard ones are very good, got them on my XJ after chewing up so many stock nuts I got fed up with them. I just bought a wheel fitting set from Quadratec with locking nuts included too.
