WJ 2.7 CRD Limp Home Mode, no fault codes WTF?
« on: November 16, 2011, 09:51:02 AM »

Dropped little 'un off at school just now and Jeep was fine, got back in to drive home and MIL is on and truck is in limp home mode  :011:.  Did the fault code extraction and got "done" after it went through its light/dial testing, so no codes, turned engine on and off a few times but MIL still on and still in limp home.  Going to go and disconnect battery for half hour and see if that helps, but anyone got any suggestions while im doing that?  Dutch if you happen to be reading this, you had anything similar on your WJ?!

I'd get a reader on it rather that just relying on the dial check sequence method.

I know you're right, but my nearest stealer is about 40 miles away and I need to go down the motorway, which I dont fancy doing at 30mph!

Any Snap On reader will give you the fault codes. Just find a local independent and they will tell you what up

Greg,

Last time I was in limp home mode was when the ABS ECU packed up.

Strange that you have apparently experienced a major fault (MIL) and no codes ...  very odd.

As said above, only a puter will tell you what's going on I'm afraid.

My local Kwik Fit does diagnostics scan for about £35 and last time I was in they did it for free while they re-charged the air-con on my Golf.

There should be somewhere nearby to get it done for a small fee.

Had this problem on mine this summer off road for 6 weeks while sorting, turned out to be a faulty ECU for the gearbox located under the carpet next to gear lever drivers side. Mates garage has the DRB machine we got another customer in and tried his ECU and my car worked fine put mine on his same fault. So had to bite and get a new unit from the dealers with discount just under £600. plus all the labour from the auto lec chap.

Bloody hel, my V8 will still do 65 in its limp home mode.

When I had it mine was the throttle position sensor throwing up all sorts of problems, cheap as chips for a replacement, not sure id the CRD has one though.

I was investigating similar occasional symtoms on my 2.7crd before I sold it. No code, light on, self resetting after a couple of restarts.

I was pointed towards a known problem where all the ecu bits to do with the gearbox ecu dont talk properly to each other. Conversation with dealer confirmed they had seen this and a software reinstall/upgrade sussed it  :icon_super:

Resolution has been found!

Firstly though, thank you very much to everyone for their replies. Looks like there are some more common issues on the crd coming to light.

For me, I was lucky, I decided to call out AA in the hopes that they had the right scanner onboard, and if they didn't I have their cover for parts thingy, so if it turned out to be a major component at least I'd get some cash back for the repair....anyway, I digress... Bloke from AA stuck on his normal OBD and confirmed there were no fault codes that he could read, but he did a reset with the tool, which turned MIL light off, and after a quick test drive took the car out of limp home mode. According to him sometimes the ecu flags up a ghost error even though there aren't any codes and it has to be reset (even though no codes to clear). I'm dubious about the explanation but for now seems to have sorted the problem, although could be an indication of needing the software upgrade dave mentioned.

On a different note (but wanted to put this here in case it helps anyone else in the future), AA guy checked his database on the WJ crds and the only thing that flagged up as a problem point was the crankshaft sensor which gives intermittent cutting out issues when it's faulty.

So back to some happy trucking, until the next time  :greggmo:

Thats great news, just in case anybody is looking for a similar fault on the 3.1, mine was the temperature sensor behind the fuel lines on one of the heads toward the rear of the engine, only it wasnt the sensor as such, rather the connector.
