Sorry gents....one of those Ohhhh shit moments.  :icon_redface:

Luckily have not had too many of them on the CJ.  Got one of those 6V,12V & 24V chargers, semi professional jobby.

Thought charger was off and then switched to 24V in stead of 12.  Can only have been for 5 sec. tops.

Saw some sparks flying off the terminals. Can that fry a 52 amp car battery ?

Battery is now dead.  :die:

From what you have posted the answer seems to be yes, but it seems to be quite an extreme re-action for such a small time. Possible the battery may not of been to good to start with :icon_sad:

:iagree:
sounds like you battery was on the way out before you tried to charge it
Most lead acid battery's will cope with over voltage for a short time. your talking minutes to boil out a battery at 24v with a normal charger

sounds like you have bent the plates creating a total short, you could try the old bic pen fix. take the pen casing and push it into the filling holes so that it pushes the plates apart. might save the battery but realistically your pushing towards a replacement

Had a chat with me lecky colleagues at work if they had any spare batteries they take of the boats.

Yeah we've got six or so but they're a very popular item in the yard.

When we got to the lecky store only 2 were left. One big one which probably would not fit in the tray anyway and 1 smaller one.

The smaller one is a Tudor Technica TA12 60Ah 540A and I think it is a gel battery.  Trawled all of google but could find very limited
info on this battery.  All I know is that they're a subsidiary of Exide, so that's good news.

It's on the charger now so with abit of luck all will be A-ok
