Help/advice with CJ-7 Rear Shock choice
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:41:12 AM »

Gents,

At pick-up Bubba told me that due to the 2 inch lift the rear shocks are nearly at max extention
which could result in a rough ride in certain conditions.  (Bubba please comment if I got it wrong)

His advice is to fit new ones 3 inch over stock.

I may have mentioned that the brother of my dad-in-law was head honcho at Monroe UK and I believe that
his son is now in charge.

Been looking at the Monroe website but I don't know what I'm looking at.

Can any of you guys have a look and come up with a part number/type of shock (rear only) that I need.

I can then investigate and see if there is any merit in being extended family, without making an arse of meself.

Thanks.

you need to know 3 things

top and bottom fixings
length closed
length extended

measure your current shock and source some that have the same fixings and closed lenght but extend to 3" longer (wou may need to increase closed length but try not to do so by much)

If you do have to increase closed length of the shocks then look at extending the bump stops so the body hits them before it reaches full shock closing point

Yup Llama sorted me when I extended wheelbase and raised height on the '1 Ton'.

Just gave measurements as Bubba says and he had some there....... and to me in 2 days.... :icon_biggrin:

if you go to a site such as 4wd.com and look at the shocks for your vehicle some manufactuers list what is suitable for your lift and include closed and extended lengths too.

You can then tell the monroe man what you need. This may be a better option than the measuring process although that can be used for a double check.

And i think Monroe shocks are re-badged as Omix in USA

Good luck  :greggmo:
