Conflicting advice from Jeep - 2.7 CRD auto transmission oil
« on: January 20, 2012, 11:20:14 AM »

Can anyone clear up for me what transmission oil should go into the 2.7 CRD WJ's - the service manual says:

DESCRIPTION - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
Mopar ATF +4, type 9602, Automatic Transmis- sion Fluid is the recommended fluid for DaimlerChrysler automatic transmissions.
Dexron II fluid IS NOT recommended. Clutch chatter can result from the use of improper fluid.

DESCRIPTION - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID - W5J400
NOTE: Refer to Service Procedures in this group for fluid level checking procedures.
Shell 3403 Automatic Transmission Fluid is the recommended fluid for the W5J400 DaimlerChrysler automatic transmission.

Called Jeep to make sure they had some ATF+4 in stock before making the journey, and the guy there says "no sir, that transmission doesnt use ATF+4, it uses what we have always referred to as Mercedes oil, which will be 12.83 per litre"

Do I trust the Jeep parts bloke, or the manual.... :banghead:

Whats the model number for the transmission in the 2.7's?

Look at my thread in General about WJs - Tim posted a link to a tech site about the gearbox. A few scrolls down there is a whole section about oil options.

I would go for an MB oil specified for that gearbox.

Yup, it's a Benz. Before you start messing about with the oil, you need to purchase the correct dipstick for it too as they don't have one.

The FAQ for that transmission is here http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/1463460-mercedes-benz-722-6-transmission-faq.html

But basically, as Mr. H says, go to a Benz dealer and ask for tranny oil for a 722.6. If they ask what car, tell them
a 2003 E270 CDi

Edit: And while you're there, get a dipstick, as suggested by Mike. Also read the instructions on how to use the dipstick,
as it's not straightforward.
