Radio or not, 98 Grand Cherokee
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:19:54 PM »

I tried to charge my battery (completely flat) while it was fitted in the car but it wouldn't charge just clicked on and off but did cause the alarm to go off !! ?
removed the battery the it charged ok but now the radio just has a green glow to the screen and the anti theft light flashing, I'm presuming that as the electric ariel doesn't work that the radio doesn't now turn on, at least it doesn't respond to the power button, I have checked the radio fuse and that's ok.
Anyone got an idea or have I fried it

Certainly doesn't sound too good....

Check the earth on your battery, if it's not good, I have heard of cars using the radio as it's earth and frying the radio if the main earth is bad :(

Failing that, disconnect the battery again for 30 secs or so.... and re-connect smoothly.

[edit = Doh, no I don't, I do it the other way round... Stew is right :( ]Personally I always remove the + first, then the neg, and replace the neg first before the +, dunno if that's right, but I should imagine putting the plus on first might cause problems....

EE

OK tried reconnecting the battery and its still the same, maybe the radio has blown the internal fuse ? thing thats confusing me is the flashing anti-theft light, does anyone know if its got a shutdown mode and needs resetting.

Hi Mike, difficult to explain but basically with ignition on the radio 'screen' glows green but with no info displayed, electric ariel doesn't work (presumably as radio not on) red anti theft light (on radio) flashing but radio doesn't respond to the power switch so don't get as far as it asking for code ???

Have you tried turning the radio on? I know it sounds daft,  but are the headlights on with the green glow? some radios still have a backlight when turned off (I've never turned mine off :) ) try just turning it on, should ask for the code hopefully ?

Hi Ed, Green glow on regardless of headlights, comes on with the ignition but doesn't respond to the radio power switch.

"short" (sorry) or getting it getting it out and trying it outside the beast, not sure... maybe you have fried it..... Saying that, it could be something simple like my old renault one, a diode that was known to go in them (phillips rebadged) and got it fixed for ~ £40 @ Canterbury car radio. It's a gamble though as you payed the £40 whether they fixed it or not..... Halfords had an MP3 with RDS radio the other day for £70....

Yes looks like I'll have to take it out, trouble with getting a new one is fitting it as the grand has a double din size

So does the Paj, but a trip to the breakers (Rover 600 if I remember) and pulled a tray out and fitted it the paj.... can only see it if you look close....

Or halfrauds to a tray too... but they want £15 or so for it.

Go have a chat with your local ICE or car radio shop and ask them if there are known faults.... If there are, then its probably worth getting it fixed.

I love this site  8)
I will have a look over the weekend and report back, only thing about replacing the radio is that anti-theft light, need to find out if it's part of the car alarm system or a seperate one for the radio

The security light is a "Feature" you can get on other stereos, or you can just get a standalone one instead...

Here's an example of a radio with a security LED (prob not suitable though)

Which radio is it?  Cos I've got a 6 button Mopar one that came out of me 99 Cherry.

It's sittin' here doing nothing and could do with a new home.

Part No. is P05269484 (It's on a label on the top of the unit)

Hi Chris, thanks for your offer I might contact you later if thats ok, at the moment Gina's got me knocking walls down to fit a new larger kitchen so it looks like it might be sometime before I get to drag the old unit out from its cubby hole, for info its this one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5857023912&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

On further investigation the backlight only comes on with the ignition and nothing on the accessories position, so I'm hoping that it may have an internal fuse blown, although why that should have gone before the main fuse I don't know.
Cheers
John
