Author Topic: WJ NS front flat - new spare on now - how long can I drive with this for ?  (Read 2644 times)

It has certainly been a day of opposites today  :icon_rolleyes:

first Doggie  :010:.....than first outing of Blue for pics  :greggmo:........now left front flat on the WJ  :jpshakehead:

Screw (no not that one ..... :003:) of somekind about an inch in from sidewall, tyre chap down the road does not even entertain
a repair and said new in 2 secs flat.....erm....me say....no can do Jeep you know.....drivetrain and mismatch tyres and all.

Ah chap says.......quote you for 4 new ones then.  Was not in the best frame of mind this morning so told him to go fuck himself.

Questions :

How long can I run with this brand new Goodyear Wrangler spare, any chance of damage (seeing that I've got well travelled Pirelli Scorpions A/T's)

If this tyre chap is right and it is to close to sidewall for plug repair what are my options ?

When I bought pirelli's I got 5 so I still have got 1 new one in the rafters.......so if I'm looking at new on all 4 corners better start looking for 3 others then  :icon_rolleyes:
(queue Tank....the ebay search machine  :icon_super:)

Oh...and thanks for the vote of approval on Blue ...... very happy bunny but I'll have to get used to driving a CJ ....flippin 'eck  :icon_eek:

if you have quadradrive, I wouldn't drive too long like that. If quadratec2 don't worry about it as you have an open front diff

oh and if you can't find a replacement with simlilar tread depth you can get one "shaved" to loose some tread. Very wastefull but needs must, any good tyre shop that deals with motorsport tyres should be able to shave a tyre down

Is the tyre really bad or is the guy trying to cover himself and make some cash? Normally a plug can go anywhere in the tread area safely. You can buy the plug kits and do it your self.

I used to live on a little island that got hit by a category 5 hurricane. With building rubble everywhere and no tyres to be had after a few months I had 27 plugs spread around a set of Goodyear MTR's.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It makes for a tough weekend. :010:

How bazaar!! Have last week found out the Hankook 265x70x17 are no more,  I fooooked a side wall and need only one tyre, as I'm a fussy foooooker have now ordered new KM's as the thought of an odd tyre was more than I could bear!!


Anyone for Hankook RT03 in 265x70x17 - I have three kicking about 50% good, cheap?

Its not because its an MT its because the damage is too close to the sidewall... :banghead: :banghead:

Tyre thing now hopefully sorted, pulled an equally well travelled scorpion off ebay for £25.  MOT tomorrow so guess
assuming that tyres have one more year left in them cost will be kept down for the time being..  Got v good relationship with garage so
will just have to bear with me until this tyre shows up and put everything the way it was.

As for driving CJ...... have to be very careful in first, certainly when wet otherwise I'll end up facing the way I came from  :icon_eek:

vulcanise patch on the inside ?

ok everyone goes on about transmission wind up due to one tyre being more worn than the other. I would have thought jeep would have investigated the effects of this during the development stage of the driveline. If the system is a permenant 4wd then mismatched tyres and tread depth would have been tested to see the cause and effect as they wouldnt have expected anyone to replace all four tyres if one suffers from a failure. If you asked a dealer about the situation where a tyre is damaged and cant be replaced would you buy the vehicle if he answers sorry mate you got to replace all four? i dont think so especially if your looking at a bill for total tyre replacement.

Part time 4wd is a different situation where this concern is totally understandable.

Dave exactly same thought here.

You drive in US, get a flat in the middle of nowhere, have to drive another couple of hundred miles before you can
get to where you're going.

Will the transmission blow up because you put the new spare on ?

Doubt it !!

Now I'm gonna hijack my own thread.

Well went for a bimble todaybut not to the cornish coil&leaf club. First I want to learn how to drive this thing before anything else.

Where's the link to the Birties driving school for CJ noobs  :hysterical:

The usual or is it me ?

- Powersteering is very light and at speed the truck feels like you're driving in jelly. It's like those 50's movies where when they're driving on screen they move the steering wheel from side to side.
- Was doing a country lane and arrived at a short steep climb and 120 degree bend. Road was damp + some leaves and OS wheel started spinning and I could not get up there in one go  :017:  left a black mark in the bend and plenty of smoke.  :icon_redface:  was in 2wd .... did I need to shift to 4wdh before tackling this with traction on both rear wheels?  I know to have proper 4wd I first have to engage the locks in the front wheels but do you pop in and out to do this ?
- 1st gear : well its more like 1 and a half if not 2. Are Cj's geared in such a way that the gears are so 'long' ? also relating to next question......
- When up to 45'ish shifted to 4th gear and did not have the power to keep going had to drop back in 3rd  :017:  on my first outing that was fast enough  :diarrhea:
- What rev's do you get up to with the old 4.2 before you change gear ?

That's it for now but driving this thing doesn't half make you smile.  Ended up in town and pulled up at the petrol pump ..... smiles all round  :icon_super:

a lot is down to driving style, firstly you can probably forget 50% of what you learnt driving the elecro-wagon off road, from my experience theres little transition from road to offroad, when you get to the rough stuff you stop lock the front wheels select low and accept you aint going any faster than 35mph.

man, this needs its own thread, reminds me of driving my old s11a about, fun uphills, 1st gear, double de clutch to 2nd by which time you're too slow, so back to first again, fun and games :003:
