How high is my Jeep.... Or a Chinaman
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:58:21 PM »

I'm trying to decide what size tyres to stick on Osama the J'heep and am unsure what size tyre will fit underneath. It seems to be taller than most other XJs but it could be because it has pretty new springs at the back and all the other XJs I've seen have knackered springs.... So the question is, what is the standard ride height of an XJ and where is this measurement taken?

Also I have 15 inch rims (Got 16inch in the shed too) and a standard axle arrangement, what is the largest tyre that can be fitted without placing undue stress on the half shafts.. Osama will be used for pottering round on tarmac most of the time but would like him to be useful off road too and since I'm as deaf as a post, tyre noise is not an issue

Thanks for any advice guys.

You have OME +2.5" springs on the back.235-75-15 or 235-70-16 will be fine with loads of choice

Thanks guys. Just been out with the tape measure and I have 18inch at the front and 19.5 Inch at the rear.... Since I'll be pulling the front suspension apart  I suppose that I could replace the springs to try to level things up a bit... Did I read somewhere that the coils of a diesel would give an extra couple of inches or did I imagine it?

No,coils..... The rear, as Steve said is +2.5 inch and the leaf springs are nearly new but I would like to raise the front so it looks a little less like a dragster... Then I can pick a set of tyres for it

Thanks Steve, Not sure I'm keen on packing blocks under springs, I'd much rather have either longer springs or stiffer springs to give me the extra couple of inches.

clayton in the usa are seriously worth considering, but might be at the top end of your budget

Thanks Dave.... Not sure that I want to spend a lot on levelling the car up but if a couple of springs off a diesel will give me a couple of inches on the front then I dont mind buying a couple and fitting them or if anyone is breaking an XJ with raised springs then that would be good..... Fact is the car is a cheap runabout to be used to keep me mobile in the Winter and for a bit of fun at the week end.... If I end up sticking it on it's roof, then I won't be too upset..

mine was a cheap runabout but then as with all jeeps you start to build to your ideas.
