Hopefully the Chief will run a lot better now all the bits are on and been renewed etc, but on a long run on a sunny day sittin in traffic it used to get too hot (ie pullover and rest hot) so thinkin of bein pre-emptive and gettin some hood vents (yes Bubba, they probably are ghay

).

So any recommendations of the vents themselves - ideally sensibly priced?

And is there any obvious place they should go?

ok vents work best when moving, less effective when in traffic.

the most common mistake is to fit them like scoops, they work by letting air OUT not in so fit them between the back of the fan and air filter, past the air filter the airflow is disrupted and may cause a low pressure area reducing air into the carb.

personally I would go for a more effective rad or try water wetter before cutting into the hood

Over the manifold!

over the inlet ie carb to get cool ain't to induction to help running
And as much air to and or around exhaust manifolds....

Apart from vent in hood....
Also try exhaust wrap around manifold and or headers this will move heat away from engine bay.
cut some of inner arch/fender away to allow mor heat out.
And I have seen this on Pirate..... A small fan on either side at rear of fender inner to suck air out.
Or aux electric fan as a pusher on the rad....... I had to do that with the YJ when in road use as the 8274 obscured tooooo much rad for normal use at over 60...

Warthog/ mark will tell you of the Lardy trick of a fan on underside of hood above exhaust manifold blowing thro hood vents but then you with a V8 will need two.

water wetter does work to a degree but it is aimed for use in hot climates not as an every day use to reduce temperature. fit bigger rad or bonnet vents. as for placing that will raise another argument/discussion.

front of the bonnet for normal cruising as this draws the heat taken from the rad out, for offroading and slow driving then place them towards the back of the bonnet to draw the heat away from the rear of the engine, on a v8 these would be place over the rear part of the exhaust headers (bit obvious)

I'm planning on fitting a Bonnet Fan, but I wouldnt want to see that on the Chief, go for a better Radiator. Chances are yours isn't cooling as good as it should. Remember your waggon was made for hot climates.

yeah they should no be fitted to the tailgate thats the blunt end for best efect fit them to the sharp end

I put 2 bonnet vents on the XJ near the back facing the windscreed (see the heat coming out) The vents are for the Defender, got them from a place in Derby but are listed at www.bearmach.com. part number BA5900.

They were on my radar, thinkin some anti-colour could sort out the shine, but price could be a prob there, I think the 5 louvre would be needed coz the size of the Chief

there is a bunch in the uk, who you can send ya bonnet to and they will press louvres in anyhow any style you want. not too dear either
