Not Using Jeep for While....
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:06:28 AM »

Well I'm still not able to drive my ZG almost 3 weeks after my op and I'd think it's going to be another week or two.
I have a solar panel hopefully keeping the battery topped up but was wondering if it's better to just leave it till I will be driving it, or would it be better for it to go out and start it up leaving it running for say 30-40 mins every couple of days??

Thanks in advance.

Providing the solar jobby is a pukka one that won't overcharge the battery, it should be fine. Personally, I would start her for few mins just to get the oil back up the top of the engine at least once a week. Put the tranny case in neutral and shove her in gear for a sec will flow some oil round the gearbox too.

And when you do drive her again, just take it slow for the first few miles to get the diffs and everything covered properly again.

If the solar panel is the £20 small type sold for "keeping battery topped up" then forget it. It puts about as much charge into a battery as a clock uses !
I've got one and it puts out about 0.5 amp at approx 9v  of charge in bright sunlight. A "proper" solar panel is another matter but I'd expect you'd have to pay £100+ for one.
Personally I'd just leave it until you are well enough to drive again. I leave cars for months at a time without touching them and as long as decent battery in first place and no alarm etc to drain then they are more than capable to starting a vehicle.

Sorry should have given details.

I've recently bought an ex Iraq CJ-5 to restore. Very little history is known other than the MOD dispersal sale receipt from 1993 which says "Iraq Jeep".
I assume it's was "war booty" and has never been registered in UK.
Chassis and tub very sound but front wings almost completely sandblasted of paint. Engine missing and stripped to rolling chassis. It's going to need a compete rebuild but I only paid £300 so am happy.
I've had 2 x Series II Land Rovers, 2 x Range Rovers and still have a Discovery but fancied a Jeep for a change.
I've 2 x Vm diesel engines (later 2.5 not troublesome 2.4) so am going to see if I can adapt one to fit into the CJ5 during the restoration.
