Strange knocking, might be the propshaft??

Right, firstly, please excuse me if my mechanical ignorance shows though in the this thread... I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give.

My 97 XJ has a 3" lift with castor corrected fornt arms. If I have had my foot off the thottle and then press it / touch it / tickle it, I get a "donk" noise and a slight jerk. It feels like something in the drivetrain "taking the strain". Same thing happens if i take my foot off the gas sharply and also when the autobox changes down (but not up, oddly).

Any ideas?

Sounds very familiar... get underneath and give the driveshaft a wiggle and twist. mine was the UJ at the rear of the shaft, but could just as easily be the front one, or the CV joints at the wheels. Worst case would be your diff. so hope it's a UJ. Got mine from lighthouse. Fairly easy to change (Large vice, copper mallet and some sockets) Do check the front driveline too...

will it be tighten up job or a replacement if it's the UJ??

Replacement, If it's worn enough to be knocking, then it ain't well...

Was ~ £25 an end on the TJ for greaseable ones.... also add to your list a "Needle" Grease nozel to grease them in place... that gap gets pretty darn small once it's straight... :)

Let's pray it is the uj (s) and not the diff...  :o

I'm pretty sure it'll be the rear uj, that sounds like where the noise is coming from... Unless it IS the rear diff but i cant think it'll be buggered already (i've never manged to tag that one offroad and that car's only done 55k miles...)

Right, I had a quick look and they seemed ok so i popped down to the local independant jeep specialist (not sale, just servicing/repairs/mot etc).

He put the jeep up on the ramp and came back 5 minutes later to say the uj on the front right driveshaft is buggered and it'll cost £845 plus vat to fix!

WTF???

After I'd left, i had a look at it myself and it doesn't look particularly worn (it certainly looks no different to the left side one).

Anyone got any ideas?

I'd really appreciate any feedback cause I'm going to t ake it back to the garage I bought it from and see if they'll fix it. Way I see it, a driveshaft shouldn't be failing after 50,000 miles and especially not 3 months after i bought the car from a garage. They serviced it before I got it, does anyone know if the driveshaft UJ's are part of a minor service?

I must admit, i was very surprised. I askedc him why he couldnt just replace the UJ and he insited it was a replacement driveshaft.

Unless the XJ is different from the TJ, he is talking bollox, even got the workshop manual out to double check... it's just a UJ and you can change them (On the TJ)

Give lighthouse a bell and see if they stock them, at least you'll know one way or another. (And have a price)

Any local mechanic should be able to change them.

KD will probably have 1, 2, 3, or 4 spare... (  :lol: )

I can't see it costing that much to put right if it is only the uj.

Phone your local Jeep stealership and ask them the price for a new driveshaft too, give you some idea of why he quoted you so much. (You'll need your chassis number).

The only way it should be that kind of money is if one of the caps on the UJ is breaking up or spinning and has damaged the yoke on the driveshaft or stub axle. A UJ replacement is about £25 plus 1 to 2 hours labour.

I tried that route at the local landy specialist and he said it was too small, but that is just one place....

If it's the shaft, then KD might have a spare one somewhere???? so hold tight till he posts before spending huge ££$$££

just a thought, but if it were the driveshalf UJ on the front, wouldnt it click like feck on lock??

if it doesnt, my money is on the prop joint..........

either way, if the bits on yours are the same as on a 95, then we have the bits here........might be expensive to ship to aberdeen tho........

the only way to tell if the uj has damaged the shaft would be to dismatle the front axel he is deffo a master of bollox lefty take the front prop completly off and then go for a drive i thunk the carden joint is maybe to blame

Thanks for the input guys, took it back to the dealer I bought it from, they identified a knackered UJ and offered to replace it for nowt since it's within 3 months of purchase.
