tj alternator, what else fits?
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:29:59 PM »

Looks like I might need a replacement alternator for my 4l 98 tj.
Will one fit off another jeep? I would like a cheep replacement so I can rebuild mine then have a spare.

97-98 GC is a direct fit. Part number to look for is 56005686. It's output is up to 136A and has a seven groove pully but you can run the TJ belt on it by using the six that line up.

Here's one £53 posted on ebay...

I've just looked on eBay. New ones seem to be about 120 pound and looks like there all interchangeable. Is this wrong ?

Well now that you ask the wiring could be different - so long as you have the original some parts can be interchangeable, It's possible to make good.

Why? because I don't need it. My 81 Amp alternator keeps my battery charged just fine. It's handy to know what to look for though should mine ever go tit's up.

I went through the odd puddle or two over Salisbury plain last week. It's now only charging at 12v when it was14v . I'm gonna strip and clean it tomorrow, but would like a spare for the future or if mines shot.
Also lots of squeeks :0(

There's no voltage regulator in the alternator. The PCM modulates the supply to the field coils to regulate output.
