Transfer / Diff Oil Change...

How often should I be changing the oil in my diffs and transfer box?
Wondering if that's why my front is noisy?

If you dont know when they were last done then do them.

Unless you think the oil maybe contaminated by prolonged sitting in shitty / muddy water, then so long as no silly big miles every 2 years but more often if lots of off road use.

And if your TJ is stock, the rear will need friction modifier from a jeep dealer in it too  :icon_winkle:

No idea when last done, but I'd hazard over 2 years ago.
Danas front and rear with ARBs (compressor not working either so no idea if the lockers still work!)
I have some mopar additive which I believe I need to add around 80ml per diff, and some semi synthetic gear oil. Take it no extra stuff needed cause of the ARBs??

If you got ARB's, not sure you will need the modifier, only normally use it in stock diffs with clutch type LSD's.

Best wait till a proper tech comes along but def need to change the fluid if you dont know when it was last done for peace of mind & besides new oil aint gonna hurt  :icon_winkle:

I assumed the Danas still had LSD so would need the additive...?

So just normal gear oil; got my gasket sealant, drain pan and a hand pump - what could possibly go wrong...!

The factory reccomendation is to change every 30000 mikes. However, bearing in mind Jeep's horrific appetite for diff bearings, more frequent changes would be prudent. If you are offroading, use 75/140 full synthetic and check all axle and transmission oils for contamination every time you get home. A couiple of litres of oil costs a lot less than a diff rebuild.

I have some 75W90 - any good? Off road use won't be that much...
However, i'm more inclined to think its the hubs now.
With 4H engaged, but hubs still set to freewheel, there's no noise. In this situation, if it was the diff I would expect to hear the same noise...
Engage the hubs and the the noise starts...

Did the front diff are the weekend; old oil like treacle so definately needed doing! Wasn't a full strip down, but everything inside looked OK (no teeth missing etc) so refilled with new oil and off we go. Still a funny noise when hubs engaged, but until something falls off I'll live with it!
Rear diff next time its dry enough to get under it, and probably transfer box oil too for good measure...

I take it you have taken the diff covers off to drain oil ?

Did you use new gasket to refit or sealant goop..... if so which ?

Took cover off and drained as much as I could.
Cleaned both faces and used silicone gasket goop.

I have TJ with Dana front and rear.
Had silicone seal on from last time they were done so I just cleaned it off and applied new...

Yup! Free wheel hubs on rear... Not sure why; they were on there when I got it...

so in theory you can disengage front and rear and have no driven wheels?

don't doubt that what you have but have never seen it before and can't think why, am I missing something?

Warn did offer front and rear kits in the day and I never fully understood puting them on the rear.

If you are getting noise from the front you should look at the little needle bearings that are in spindle for the outer stub shaft. This set up is the same as older dana 30 and 44 set ups and uses Ford Ranger hubs if I remember correctly. Sometimes the spindle seals leak and the needle bearing will make noise.

 :iagree: Can see no real reason for having them on the rear! Hey ho! I'll see about stripping them down, but its a little out of my comfort zone TBH.
