Real world opinion of 3 speed T150 gearbox ?
« on: February 18, 2006, 12:15:59 PM »

My 1978 (ex Iraq - really !) CJ-5 is a basket case but was cheap.
The engine was missing so rather than sourcing another petrol I'm going for a diesel conversion.
The current gearbox is unknown condition but I've identified it as a T150 / 3 speed.
What is peoples opinion of this gearbox ?

Originally I thought that I'd bin it and fit a T18 4 speed but it would seem the extra gear just gives lower first and isn't normally needed for road use.

BTW I'd prefer an autobox but there isn't enough room. I'm slighly disabled (left leg problems) and already have an auto clutch which bought to fit to my Land Rover (now sold) so will fit that to the Jeep instead. You change gear as normal - just don't touch clutch pedal. There is a push button to manually disconnect clutch on gear knob for additional control when you don't want the ECU to feed it in or out. A seperate switch allows the system to be turned off for foot pedal operation. A rotary cotrol allows you to dial in the desired auto clutch operation to suit your style.

not wanting to seem piky but that would all depend on your final coice of engine the diesel may have difrent rev range also if you say went with a four popper you may get the engine foward enough to get an auto in misubishi perhaps

Have you seen the price of Misubishi engine parts ! A friend had his Shogun overheat and cost of parts (no labour) was over £1500 to repair.

I quite fancy the idea of the 2.4 six cylinder Volvo / VW turbo diesel as it easilly fits into a Jeep in place of the original 6 cylinder AMC petrol. From what I have read it's an easy conversion and just requires the Jeep gearbox redrilling to match Volvo bellhousing.

I've looked into several alternative gearboxes but mating them to the Dana 20 transfer case is going to be difficult  so thought I'd stick which original specification uints to make things easier.

I have a very nice 4 cyl 2.5 litre (weber carb fed) petrol engine from an '84 XJ Cherokee with an  auto box attached if it'll shoehorn in.

the three speed is fairly high geared in first and has large gaps between gears so may not be suited to a relitively narow rev band of a diesel you could realy do with a 4 or 5 speed. upside of the t150 is its very strong good for 300 hp

mikes 2.5 might be the answer you could move the engine forward by 8inches as the bay was made for a six cylinder that would give you the room for the auto and still not be to heavy over the front axel

I thought about it for a few minutes but  100% definately want a diesel.
If I ever decided on petrol then I'd either fit another AMC I6 or a V8.
The engine is about the only thing I miss from my old Range Rover :-)
