  ok BD/v8 Bubbas' axle installed, ratio on new axle 2.70, original 4.20, so you see my dilema, opened original and holy shit what a mess

The only way the 6 will run is if i rebuild this axle, well bearings have slipped inside clamps, carrier is seriously wobbly, pinion gear and crown need replacing, i am looking down the barrel of the best part of £1000

So my question is has anyone got one lying about that they would sell

rebuild parts won't be that much, master rebuild & a new RnP, few hundred £ from the US, you would need the carrier from the old axle though

£300 from lightys for pinion and crown gear, old carrier is fucked on a whole new level, been run on muddy water not grease

get from the US direct, MUCH cheaper. You will need a carrier, think yours is below the break point. Would not getting a different axle be a decent option, none amc20 ?

rebuild it, at least you know its right for a few years

if you fit 2nd hand, could be nearly as bad unless you know the history

Thought of that but got 2 of the poxy things here, trying to make one good one for the 6, issues ratios wrong, carrier different (4.10 ratio the only one different, surprise, surprise) ones narrow track the other wide 

Lightys came back to me   , £800 squid the lighter   , crown, pinion, carrier, all brand spankers then look on the bay and see same stuff cheaper but i cant trust the potential state of it, and shipping costs put it above Lightys.

Sod it its new and gonna fit and THIS TIME I WILL TREAT THE AXLE TO OIL and a little Lucas thickening agent  

Just need to get a man who knows how to set it all up, i aint risking doing it myself

Diesel is correct. I have 2 x AMC  20 rear axles here. 1 has 4.10 ratio the other 3.54. They are both from a q/trac so are off centre diff and narrow track, but r&p could be used for rebuilding yours. I am open to offers, collection only,  located in Gloucestershire. pm me if interested.[attachment=1]

Jeep CJ any thanks for your offer, scrw is correct i am impatient  and the reason for that is i am trying to get the 6 running before cheapfest. Honestly that aint looking good 

I have spunked his cash purchased with sound mind ( as sound as can be for a Birty ) brand new internal bits for the diff, all the bearings will be new and the gears, shims OIL (essential, dont use muddy water) etc.  I am gonna have a brand new diff essentially.  This in mind i am hoping i wont need a donor axle, however knowing my luck do you mind if i give you a pessamistic rain check just in case. 

Again thanks i am after some other bits, wiper motor and linkages, windscreen fold seal, seats, roll cage  the list is long, why do i still love old iron

Nick, I could have sworn when I left yours yesterday the last words out of my mouth were wait & see whats available second hand first!! 20 mins later I get a text msg saying all new parts ordered!!
So now we have added an axle rebuild to the ever growing list of jobs (next time you buy a truck, please don't buy one thats been put together by a one armed blind man on crack) do we need to talk bonus favours if I manage to get it finished for the 8th?? considering I have a weeks holiday to fit in between now & then too! I feel some long days & late nights are coming on, plus it will need a few miles under it's belt too & a days laning to make sure nothing breaks when you get it stuck!

Hmmm...................This ain't gonna help fix your axle none, but I'd be grateful if you could clear up this little mystery for me.

I thought all '72 to '75 CJ5 and CJ6 used Dana 44 rear axles tabbed for the narrow rear chassis.

'76 onwards CJ5 and CJ7 (CJ6 dropped) used wide tabbed AMC20 axles to suit the dual width chassis.

I never heard of a factory fitted AMC20 on a CJ6 - is it a changeover model?

Keep up Ferret! its a later post 1975 cj6 as they kept on making them for quite a bit longer, until the 80s i believe! for export only though

My visits to these forums have been pretty few of late.

So is the late CJ6 chassis sorta CJ8 related then?

I'm assuming that the body tub/scuttle pressings etc on a late export CJ6 would follow CJ7/8 practice with a CJ7 type windscreen then?

Don't look like it at the moment.

One ferret just died, one ferret MIA suspected eaten.

All Jeeps out of action, and the unmentionable 4x4 not running at the moment.

The plan for 2012 was to bring a Mindy on a trailer behind the Lardy, along with a collection of biting things.

It's not gonna happen.

Hopefully 2013 will be a better year.
