What the chuff is goin on this time?
« on: September 11, 2012, 04:02:58 PM »

I will give the whole story in case some aspect is important:

Journey to CF was fine apart from its still running too hot (not overheating hot though –right on the edge of the red line for much of the time). Nice and smooth journey vibration wise etc.

First journey out at CF small electrical fire –wires shorting out – resolved by BJZJ

Second journey out at CF larger electrical fire –elec conduit melting on exhaust header –resolved by BJZJ

Third journey out at CF – into sheep dip which seems to have shrunk and so got wedged (shouda attacked with more beanz), this resulted in bent leaf springs (pointing up at right angles), wonky axle, loose steering, bent front prop and a tyre ripped off – rescued by a whole host of folk at the campsite but cheers Sparky, BJZJ, J33ky for getting me actually back to camp (I had no spare – lack of room and so the beer fridge won the argument) coz I was wondering how I was gonna convince the AA to trundle up to the sheep dip.

So, then I left, stopped at the garage about 2 miles away to pump up the tyres and got a flat battery. Top pikey dood in a white van went off to house and came back later and gave us a jump start.

Noticed a noise similar to fan belt squeal but it was connected to the wheels being in motion.

Drove bout another 5 miles and overheated. Pulled over and waited. Started off again.

Pulled into another garage bout 2 miles further and jet washed engine bay & rad and everything else. Heat was fine.

Hit the m/way and the heat went back up to being bang on the line at the start of the red. Drove another 50 is h miles and pulled into services. Came out and it started fine albeit a bit sluggish.

Vibrates like a vibrator.

Stopped for fuel and dead battery (in theory). Rolled back to the side of the garage, banged my head on the steering wheel and called it some choice names, turned the key and up it started.

Another 50 miles of m/way saw the same problem with heat and then on a long hill it was tipped over the edge and I had to stop. And I expect you guessed that then I had a flat battery.

Long story next but essentially got another jump and travelled another 6 miles at a steady 60 mph with the temp at the old levels of halfway along the dial (I assumed that was due to it being bloody freezing at 1am), BUT then with no obvious reason why everything died, cut out completely, nada, nowt etc. Needless to say the battery was flat again.

Got towed home.

24hrs later after a very long charge via jump leads it started again.

So, I'm guessing the battery is fubar and/or its not being charged at all.

But what is the diagnosis for it just cutting out and dying the last time?

I need to organise another job list and would like to know what the heck is going on so its all good to go again after the new suspension & prop is fitted.

And I have sorted the overheating.

Cheers gents

Also check or have checked..... :icon_biggrin:

the alternator
Solenoid on starter and starter motor..... All earth cables to chassis starter motor etc

Good time to replace all cables with new terminal crimped on and monster cable like you just bought.

and after my Icelandic tyre seating trick on Saturday morning I owe you a new lighter thing for your Coleman  :king:
Tis on the to do list.

Some of that sounds very much like the alternator belt was slipping [so not charging the battery]..not sure if the belt also turns the water pump and fan as it does on mine. If the above is correct, then, when you have a flat battery at 30,000 feet, everything just shuts down. Been there, done that..had the whole panel go black! When the noise stops, the ground [or the hard shoulder] sucks.[just like a Dyson]. The squealing sound suggests a belt slip..not the other bit you mentioned. All the other advice and suggestions are spot on and will need to be looked at.

did you empty all the shite out of the tyre as well? From the pic earlier it may need taking off & washing out.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere, id start by cleaning and copper slipping the battery terminals and make your way from there.
If you had asked me at the weekend i could of checked the alternator for you  :003:

some of the wires that melted where to the alternator regulator so get the alternator checked as it may of stressed it so it would fail at some point
You need to get the fix up repair i did on site redone as a lot of the wires need to be rerun

there could be other problems in the loom looking at the state of the wiring before it melted it was not good

sorry if i missed something at cheapfest  :die:

Brakes would stink if they were dragging surely, especially over the distances Bd was travelling  :017:

Possible warranty claim off the other Dave though especially after making you follow him down that narrow gully his ZJ fit nicely through :003:

you all know I blame BJZJ coz if i had gone first i would just launched the Molotov to victory but i watched him go all dainty and tiptoe thru the dip so i thought i would try that method - not the Molotovs style  :011:

I am just wondering if you have in fact compacted it deeper into the red core by using the jetwash from the front, or see how many of the fins you have pushed flat.
