I was intending to buy this XJ, but there seems to be an issue
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:00:19 PM »

At least the ebay seller is being honest, we had a deal struck that would have relieved me of my Jaguar S Type and in the seat of a tidy 97 4.0L XJ, and then......

Quote
DEVELOPED A FAULT WITH THE 4WD SYSTEM.IT HASN'T BEEN USED IN 4WD SINCE JULY TIME,SO I THOUGHT I'D BETTER TRY IT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS OK.SO SELECTED 4WD,PUT IT INTO DRIVE AND MOVED OFF.MET BY LOTS OF NOISE FROM DRIVETRAIN AND SOME VIBRATION.STOPPED,SELECTED 2WD(ALL 4WD LIGHTS WENT OFF ON DASHBOARD),BUT IT STILL APPEARED TO BE STUCK IN 4WD.AFTER A COUPLE OF MOVEMENTS IN FORWARD AND REVERSE IT RELEASED AND IS NOW BACK IN 2WD.BEEN TOLD IT COULD BE LOW ON OIL IN THE FRONT DIFF,THE TRANSFER BOX OR UJ'S?

Can I presume there is no easy diagnosis without having the Jeep in my garage on axle stands?

Shame, I wanted it

Personally I wouldnt be too bothered by that, mine has always been temperamental, if its transfer box (242) is put into full time 4x4 or any other position then back to 2wd it gets stuck in 4x4 part time (this will explain the juddering etc) so I rack the selector back and forward a few times, drive off in a straight line, shove the lever into 2wd then take me foot off the gas and it 9 times out of 10 clunks back into 2wd, with mine its the 4x4 lamp sender switch, if I was to go buy a new one and fit it it would probably sort it out.

What about the noise the seller describes?

Well he hasnt really described it really, and from the sounds of it it hasnt been used in full time 4x4 for quite some time, the TC selection does stiffen up and its quite possible that it didnt select the full time position fully and was partly in part time 4x4 and when that happens they produce this strange whiny groan, tis quite common, and if he tried to go round a tight bend then you get this horrible jerking and skipping of the front wheels because the front axle is locked to the back and you get wind up (part time only to be used on slippery surfaces) best thing really is to go look at it, is it a mk1 or mk2 facelift ?? they both have their similar and different problems, as previously said by someone on here the noise could be anything forward of the transfer case but spare parts for xj's are in abundance new and s/h ... if you cant look at it or drive it before you buy then maybe as also said previously leave it alone.

Thanks for the response

It's a 1997 Facelift 4.0L with 125,000 mile on the clock, it does seem to have a service history, but it also has other "issue's", with the airbag light on (clockspring?) a stutter or miss-fire which clears when revved, and a blowing exhaust

If it was local, I would be over trying to sort out a deal, but it is in Llanni and I am in North Essex so that option is not even a starter

I am concluding, leave it alone

I don't mind you asking at all!!

The deal I had originally worked out valued the Jaguar at £1275

A little less than I would have liked, but it got me into the Jeep I have been looking for

Still up for any sort of deal
