Grand Cherokee CRD intermittant power loss, help please?
« on: November 16, 2012, 02:25:52 PM »

Hi all
When we were returning home from Bournemouth on Monday, about 1/2 an hour into the journey Sharon suddenly noticed that we had lost power (she was driving obviously...:)) and the car seemed to have lost power. No lights came on the dashboard and the engine ran fine, just felt as though there was no turbo, massive power loss. Everything else was fine. We drove on for a while to see if the fault would clear itself but it did not. Eventually we pulled into a service area to use the loo and when we restarted the car, the fault had cleared and we drove the rest of the way home without problems....
It drove fine on Tuesday when I drove it a short distance and yesterday I drove it to Saffron Waldon without the problem showing up, however about 20 minutes into the return journey it dumped power and felt like it had gone into a limp home mode, and it struggled to reach 60MPH :(. I switched it off and restarted the engine straight away and everything was back to normal all the way home, no problems.
Can anyone point at what could be causing this please?
Thanks in advance

Have you got any fault codes stored in the ECU?

Switch your ignition on 4 times in quick succession then leave it on. Any codes will come up in the odometer display.

Had this prob on a Ford diesel C Max and, after loads of people not knowing was the actual turbo that was at fault

Something about the vanes not doing what they should and therefore no boost and ...... Then OK for a few days....
started 3 years ago and only happened about twice a year so difficult to diagnose until it became regular occurrence...

turbo replacement.....job done ........ So was my wallet.... :icon_twisted:

Hope Tis not the same on yours but thought I better give you the heads up just in case

like it had gone into a limp home mode, and it struggled to reach 60MPH

Limp home mode on the grand 2.7 CRD is 2nd gear 20 mls. max so you don't have that.

As said above key in ignition on/off for 4 (or5) times in quick succession and see what the odo says.

Hi Luke
Tried that trick but no good, just get the gear range and mileage displayed???
Thanks for your (and all the others) help though, I will try to find someone local that has an OBD2 scanner that will help me...

Hi Dutch
Stupid of me I guess, I should have said.... Not sure but I think it is a WK. It is a 2005 3.0 CRD, it is the newer (not the newest....) Grand with the Mercedes engine....

Yours is a WK then.

Haven't tried it as mine is the earlier WJ, switching it 3 times should do your model and it should show in the digital display in the tacho.

Lets us know!!

Hi
I just went out and switched the ignition on 3 times in quick succession but got no codes, just the display telling me my MPG....
I switched it On-Off-On-Off-On and left it till all the warning lights were out but nothing changed on the display at the bottom of the rev counter.
Thanks for the help though :(

Thanks for the response. It was working OK when I last drove it, but this seems to be an intermittent thing. It has happened twice now and then only after driving it for a few miles so I can't seem to just jump in and replicate it at will. Sorry I don;t know what a "dpf" is. It was serviced about a year ago now, but not by a Jeep dealer or specialist.

dpf = diesel particulate filter.

Its a system that alledgedly cleans up the emmisions. Supposed to collect all the soot from the exhaust & then when its fills up, on a decent run over say 20 mins while everything is up to temp, burns it up & blows it out of the exhaust.

Beets me how collecting the crap & dumping it in one go as opposed to just letting it out is more "green" but there you go.

Sometimes if you only do short journeys, they get bunged up as they dont get hot enough to blow it out.

Or something like that  :003:

Apparently the DPF collects the soot or carbon and burns it off into CO2 on a long run to clear it.

Ironically, the Government doesn't give a shit about how much carbon you produce, but that didn't stop them robbing the best part of £600 from me in VED because they think that me and my two motors throw out more CO2 than your average rep pounding up the motorways in their eco-friendlys!

BTW, nothing against all you hard working sales reps, my beef is with the Government who get their facts wrong and pick on the wrong people.
