Direct gear lever to replace column change thoughts please
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:03:50 PM »

Because all the links in the various rods on the column change gear lever are worn I am thinking about
adapting the rod that comes out of the top of the gear box so that I can attach a single shaft and make it into
a floor change.

As parts are hard to come by for my 1975 Mitsubishi J26 especially the KM100/101 gear box I was wondering
what people thought about this idea.

The reason I am thinking about this is because I have lost "feel" when engaging gears and with the wear on the
gearbox innards it makes getting 2nd especially difficult.

I agree that the column change adds to the character.
A lot of people think the Hi/Low lever is for changing gear then mistake the 2/4WD lever for it.

The Mitsubishi was built primarily for people under 6ft (I'm 6ft 2"). I had to get the lever heated and bent just so I could change any gear and use the clutch pedal without traping my hand on top of my knee.
I can't lower the seat as it's a bench type and if I did I wouldnt be able to get my feet onto the pedals.
I can't increase the length of the top connecting rod as the gear lever is as far up the stearing column as it will go.

Roughly speaking my idea is to take the connection rod which is on top of the gearbox and turn it 90 degrees so that it sticks up through the transmission tunnel and into the cab (as opposed to going forward under the bulkhead and into the engine bay as it does now).

My J26 is right hand drive.
