« on: December 22, 2012, 07:41:04 PM »

Hi everyone only got the car yesterday and the problems are now being discovered I will keep this just to ignition and key problems, firstly it only came with one key and fob is it difficult to get it duplicated or main agent only any suggestions welcomed also when the key is in the auxiliary position ie; right back so accessories all work the key can be withdrawn from the ignition resulting in a flat battery is there a repair for this as I do not fancy replacing all locks many thanks Chris

I beleive it is how it was designed to work as I know many wj's that do it. If its not deliberate then its down to worn barrel, the other thing to do is make sure you drop it forward one click , it doesn't take a lot of jump starting to get that sorted

OK then I will live with the key coming out when I don't think it should but any suggestions on a second key and remote fob and possibly someone to code it as I know how expensive it will be if the only one is ever lost Chris

key and fob you can get easy enough but you need to get it coded at a stealership or someone with a drb3  I think

The manual should give key number.
Fob off ebay and then a trip to dealers for recode.

As you need a new ignition barrel anyway, I would go to a dealer, Jeep specialist or auto locksmith to supply a key as well, get the job done in one go. At least you'll have it all working in one go then.

this key I have now found can be withdrawn at any position even with ignition on if I were to replace the lock itself or maybe just the barrel which is probably the problem will I have to get involved with immobiliser and such like and can I get the right barrel for my key to avoid changing other locks thanks Chris

try spraying some releasing fluid into the lock it may just be gummed up a lot.

If lubing the cylinder doesn't work you can buy new cylinders and recode them to your current key. Rockauto have them for £28+VAT and delivery. About £45 with a 5% discount code. eurom112 is currently valid but can't remember till when, google rockauto 5% and you should find a code easy enough.

Cylinder matching...

To remove the barrel from your Jeep see this video which relates to the ignition switch pin.

watch from about 1:50 - 2:20. You shouldn't need to remove the shrouds, just turn the key to the on position and push in the button which allows the barrel to be removed, might be easier said than done if your key comes out in all positions. The release button is accessible via a hole in the lower shroud which is in line with the barrel.

For a new key, an alternative to the dealership is getting a cloned key done by the likes of Timpsons. I don't know what the cost would be off them for that.
Another alternative if getting the dealer to program a key would be to buy a chipped key off ebay, get it cut by your local locksmith/hardware store and then you only need Jeep to program it.

Chris
The Key barrel may be OK - tell you why!

I have recently replaced my Shift Lever Assy - and there is a cable which activates the key release solenoid! if this cable is left unconnected then the key can be removed in any position.

Try This!! Gear in Park - switch on ign (do not start) - move lever from P to R - and listen for a solenoid switch over (just below the dashboard around the key area) funnily enough :greggmo:

If you want to check the cable, remove the tray below the ashtray - remove the two star screws and lift out the tray recess - you should then see 3 cable the left one is for the Autobox select - the right one is for 4Hi /4Lo and the centre one is the Key interlock cable - you may be able to see if the cable is located or loose.
the cable locates into a recess activated by the release button on the Autobox lever - have a try and it should be self explanatory.

My NEW Shift Lever Assy was too short to connect this cable - so mine is able to remove the key in any pos'n too.

Cheers
