Bubba is doing some work on my Axles and seeing as its all in peices tis a good time to replace the front Axle UJ's. Been told by a few people that the greasable ones (in particular the Spicer) tend to need greasing alot more as the seals arnt that good. The ones i have on there at the moment arnt greasable and have not let me down.

Quesiton is should i go greasable (and what recommendations) or stick with the normal ones?

What tyre size have you? Also what locker fitted?

35" and a Trutrack, and the front shafts are standard too

Time is a factor and i was thinking of the standard Spicer 297x

can't confirm this chatter but they say ....the septics that if ya drill a hole to allow it to be greats able then there lies the weakness....... "The drilled hole"

But just came across this from old copy of CRAWL Mag....
Reel DrivelineH2 o U joints.......40% stronger non greasable....$44 to $88

Yukon super joints 72% stronger $159 to $ 245 per joint

And so it goes on...... Bet your shocked already?

Some say the grease-able one's are weaker due to the drilling of the nipple, if it was me I would look at RCV shafts or CTM UJ's ( this is what I have on the Mafia) it depends on cost I guess.

CTS's are only available for Dana 60's and 44's but i think they are the same dim's

Steve will probably have the usa alloy ones in stock and could send them up to Bubba. They have a grease nipple on the end of each truniun so all the strenght is retained in the X.

Have CTM on the Buggy also, never broke one!! They do need regular greasing though.....You can't be to careful.

Is that just on later ones as on FSJ and CJs they arent.

Greasable every time......
I have always found they fail through water getting in and causing a lack of lubricant if not, the same goes for the propshaft ones, water always finds its way in at some point and then its not long before its grinding itself to bits

I got usa automaotive heavy duty greasable ones, they usually only keep the non greasable heavy duty ones in stock but got them in within a week & £36 each

I believe they are obsolete since Jeep, upon designing the Rubicon, told Spicer they wanted a stronger UJ. The result was the stronger cold forged 760x UJ.

First choice would be Alloy USA 11500 joints or alike (used them for several years without a problem), second would be 760-X sealed ones, as previously pointed out 297-X have been replaced by 760-X. The problem with UJ's that only have one greasable trunion, is the grease doesn't often get to the other trunions causing them to dry and then fail.
