78 CJ7 Master Cylinder Leak
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:36:21 AM »

Ladies,
Mechanic just called and said I have a leak on the brake master cylinder (78 Cj7 GEagle RHD).  I would need a full repair kit with all the rubbers or a replacement master cylinder.

What are my options, any supplies in the UK and any other Jeeps I can take one from, are repair kits cheaper but would I be paying for labour? There is a wrangler YJ 4.0 for breaking for sale in Ireland I could use a few things out of it. Are thee same cylinders. I could use the power steering from it also.

If I need to buy a master cylinder should I just go with Power brake Cylinder.

Any help appreciated,
Ken

Ken,

If you running discs up front then I would defo run a power booster, I would put money on the YJ one working as I have found most parts are interchangable to about 1996 ish. Worst case is you will have to take the brake/clutch cylinders and pedals and install the complete unit. My powersteering is out of a 96 Cheerokee. All I had to do was modify the hoses and find the brackets for the V8 (hardest part) the rest just bolted directly on. You may need to change the pitman arm though as the non PS will not fit (diff splines). The Cherokee one worked for my setup but I have a 4" lift fitted.

PM me if you want more info

Yup YJ brakes is the way to go - should be reasonably available at breakers yards....
