Big Trouble

A while back, my catalytic converter started making a rattling noise, gradualy, the noise got lowder, until it finally, got quieter.  Ever since it's gotten quieter, my top speed has gradually decreased.  Now, it makes almost no noise, and my jeep won't go above 40 mph...  today, it almost completely died on me.. it idles rough, barely accelerates, and almost no air is making it through the tailpipe.  i've got a new cat on order, but I need to know if that is the only problem, or could some other sensor or random part be acting up?  Needless to say its not moving now until it's fixed... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response.  Is this a common problem?  Also, the new one wont be here until the end of the month, could i hollow out the old one in the mean time?

Yup.  Knackered cat.

Technically you don't have a cat anymore, cos it won't be working, so if I were you I'd take it off and empty the guts out of it until you get the new one

As above,
Take it off and clear it and check for any obstructions further back.
Like Chris said in effect you don't have a cat anymore, just a blocked up pipe and it probably has'nt been working for a while anyway, you'll be ok until you get your new one fitted.

Don't know whether your model has a sensor behind the cat, as well as before, but, if it has, removing the innards will cause it to activate the 'check engine' light. You can safely ignore it! When this happened to my motor, that's what happened. Fitting the new cat, disconnecting the battery for ten minutes, then re-connecting, sorted it.

i believe the before cat is the more important sensor the second or after cat is by passable or "fn" useless anyway.....

As already said, take the cat off, wack/shake it a try to get the crap out.
The post cat sensor (if it has one) is only there to tell the ECU that the cat is working.

Coud you use a replacement pipe in place of the cat, just until the new one comes?

You would however get a ticket if you were stopped and tested!

My jeep went into surgery today, we cut the cat off, poured its guts in the trash, and welded it back up... She runs like a champ again!

However, the ol' "check Engine" light lit up, is there a way to reset the light to  see if there is another problem or not?
