2005 Grand Cherokee Gear Selector Unit woes...

Hi,

I have a Grand Cherokee 2005 2.7CRD and I have been advised the gear selector unit has failed. The unit I need is a Quadtrac unit and I am struggling to get hold of one, but I can get hold of a unit from a 2001 2.7, which looks exactly the same, but has Quaddrive written on it. Does anybody know if these units are interchangable and the Quaddrive will fit mine or not?

from your post above - your selector assy is faulty.

What does it do? or not do?

The reason I ask is that I have just replaced my gear selector - and my mate has done his too!

My symptoms were - the Jeep would go into gear when first started then even 5min later would not select any drive!
My mate had repeated limp home mode issues them it eventually went into permanent limp home with a code of P0702.

Both cars showed the same at the shifter - switch the ignbition on and check out your gear select mimic lights - No Lights! put the select into R and check the reversing lamps - No lamps illuminated!!

Both cars were fixed by fitting a new selector assy - think £765 ish

According to the Jeep mechanic - these units failed regularly through the years. and to answer your question - yes you can fit another gear selector unit the Quadra Trac or Quadra Drive applies to the LSD fitted to the diff and nothing to do with the selector  :icon_winkle:

If you do not have any codes up or Limp home mode, you can swap over the selectors, as there is no need to pair it up with the TCM.
My mate's P0702 code had to be reset by a Jeep DRB machine.

Thanks for responding.

The car lost all forward drive, although reverse worked. Strangely,after a period of time it would work ok. My mechanic seems pretty sure the selector unit is the problem (it appears not to be telling the gearbox computer what gear it is in). Can't remember the codes, but when I checked it did seem to indicate that the gear selector unit was the problem.

In terms of the unit itself, do you know if the older unit (quad drive) has the same wiring as the later unit? My mechanic was a bit concerned it may not be. I have been quoted £650 for the part alone so am keen to get a cheaper alternative if possible!(but it at risk of making the problem worse).

I assume its a WJ / WG?

If so the 2.7 CRD gear selector assy is completely different to the item fitted in 4.0L / 3.1TD /  4.7 V8

iirc correctly I think there is some sort of switch in the unit other than that its just two levers operating cables
 
Maybe a part number on the switch its self?

Your problems do seem to be Selector Assy related - as i said above "do the gear mimic lights illuminate?" and do the reversing lights work when it happens? if the answer to both is NO, then your selector is dud!

The Quadra Trac & Quadra Drive issue is a non-issue! this option is determined by the transfer box(common to both types!) & diffs.
As Carlos notes, you need to obtain a spare for a 2.7CRD as this is a Merc Nag1 Transmission - I believe the 4.0 & 4.7WJ's still us the same gearbox, as the WJ was around at the same time as the Chrysler Daimler Alliance. The NAG1 has been used in many different cars and vans (Sprinter etc).

A 2nd hand part should work (assuming it's operational) but please note that whilst the car is intermittent, with no codes then the swap over will be OK - if you wait till the WJ goes into Permanent Limp Home mode then you need the Jeep DRBIII tool to reset your code. (approx £90) from a Jeep dealer

You can try these guys http://www.charltonautoparts.com/ they are very knowledgeable regarding Jeeps etc. I have just ordered a rear wiper motor for my WK Grand Cherokee from them.

Hi; My selector went completely dead, and into limp mode; I've cleaned (dried!) the board and got mimics and reverse lamps working, :-)  but still shows P0702. :icon_sad:

Do you know if the reset had to be done to bring it out of limp mode, or just to clear the MIL warning?

PS: diag also showed P2210 code before cleaning selector - haven't yet tested to see if that's cleared.

Answer to above:

The reset IS required to reset the TCM and gear function, not just turn off the MIL lamp.

The code still showed on the diag, but was successfully cleared by my local tuning guru, so my "reconditioning" of the selector board must have been successful   :greggmo:

All-in-all a very satisfying outcome, without going anywhere near a main dealer   :icon_biggrin:
