Hello ! and also Going to buy after some info.
« on: January 30, 2013, 06:56:19 PM »

Hi all firstly  :sign0023:

Now ive done the hello il start with the rest  :wsmile:

Been researching now for a while. Wanted a wj overland 4.7 H.O. On lpg after reading so many different views it left me concerned that it would be a mistake and that lpg even with a flashlube system or equiv would simply burn the valves out. Also was still unsure on quadradrive. Read good and bad overall id say more good than bad though. Ive spent countless hoirs googling.

Well that left me concerned. Should I be?

Then ive been offered a zj 4.0 i6 lpg from a person who works at the same place as me.  its clean and not been abused thats all I know for now will have a better look at the weekend. Its selec trac i believe and from my research it gets some really good reports.

The dilema comes as the zj is cheaper. It would allpw me to worry less about panel damage from offroading and i could justify it as a weekend warrior only. I would much rather a rubicon but i have kids that come sometimes out with me.  such is life.

How good is the i6 on lpg? Also any issues with them?

Either would get some lifting and tyres to help with the offroad side.

Thanks for your time

4.0 litre on LPG is by all accounts & testamonies here & elsewhere damn near bomb proof, just service it regularly & enjoy.

Only thing to caution is that as these trucks get older they do have a lot of electrickery devices, but then again you could say that of any car & age.

4.0 on gas Definately the one to go for

I have owned a 1998 ZJ 4.0i 6 LPG since April of last year and done 10,000 miles. I have had a problem with the ECU unit for the LPG which meant it needed replacing at £220.00.

As far a running is concerned, it costs me approx. £38.00 for LPG to fill a 55 litre tank which lasts approx. 10 - 12 days normal commuting.

The LPG is not really of a worry as far as performance or reliability, it seems to me with even my limited knowledge of this vehicle, it would be other mechanical/electrical reliability issues to be more concerned about.

Ive had a disco before which had electric and tin worm issues non stopis the i6 in the wj the same lpg ok? As yhat adds a option just incase this one is a no goer.

Thanks for your replys zj seems like it could be on to a win I miss play days

Had a look at the zj and as clean as it is for a jeep thats been cat c its too much money. Im sure he must think snpw tax is worth way more.

ZJ's don't particularly suffer from tin worm, other than the sills & if it's just gonna be a toy all you need do is cut them out & replace with box section! mine are box section but most people don't notice any difference from standard! As for lpg, I don't notice any difference when running on gas, the difference i notice when on petrol is how fast the bloody petrol gauge goes down! :hysterical: The 4.0 on gas is bomb proof, it can stand the extra combustion heat that the alloy V8 can't!
As for the one you viewed been a cat c, it all depends on what it was written off for? it could have been a smashed window or broken lock! if it's only gonna be a toy it's just an extra bargaining tool!
As for electrical gremlins, just expect the usual, rear wipers, seat motors, heated seats, dodgy mirrors, faulty switches, tps etc the 4.0 is a good old lump so if it's been serviced regularly & it's quiet it will be ok, be more concerned with the box & axles, they need to be quiet & shift smoothly! whereabouts are you, I'm sure a Birty could help you check a truck out, I know of a good one near here, he wants £600 for it & it's an orvis! or you could try mine out to see what one is like off road!

Soz for the slow reply but work just a bit busy.

The zj was rear damage . Defo had a quater, tailgate , backpanel , bumper etc and that on top of a £1500 price tag left me laughing.

Not done that much looking thos week due to work but have seen other zj's alot less than that and some wj's comming in not far off. Have no issue with scratches rough bodywork etc as willing to repaint it anyway to olive green or matt black.

Axels and boxes are from what ive since read through the weak point but each vehicle has one. Would prefer selectrac 4.0 i6 on gas if possible as would allow me to use it a little more. Will have a good look around at the weekend again and see whats about. Have since drove a few other options. Patrol and a shogun. Patrol was ok shogun didnt like.

Is there many wj's out there woth selectrac. As thats just opening up more options

Cheers

Elmo

If you would consider a Patrol..just a little word to the wise. Steer well clear of any pre 2006 3litre diesel versions..they aren't called "grenades" without good reason! The 2.8 TD6 is a very good option, as is the bigge diesel which is not as common...I've been driving my 2.8 for almost 5 years now and she has around 260,000 km's now without any bother (other than what I caused). At around 3000kgs she is a heavy bitch, but super reliable and surprisingly economical.

Would be a 2.8 if I was to get a patrol. Tbh it was ok to drive, brakes were vey questionable but a day of driving would get me used to them . Other than a few head cracking issues ive found and some saying underpowered they seem ok. Didnt get the 4.2 in the y61 here in the uk (i do stand to be corrected though) so it leaves only the  2.8. Ive had a disco 200tdi years ago and that taught me how to weld. Other than that a frontera which was better than expected. The jeep to me offers best bang per buck by a mile. The i6 research ive done seems a huge positive (older tech never fails). I wont have a green oval ever again, yotas are overpriced and saying that means i wouldnt want to take her out and play.

Jeep offers a few issues from what ive read dana 35 seems a weak point but other than electrical gremlins all ok.

I'd go for a 4.0 wj with or without lpg depending on what you prefer, miles driven etc. They still have electrical issues, diff and transfercase's that can need work but are a massive amount of jeep for the money.

Have to say, with six of these in my family (all with mega miles) I've never come across a head problem in any of them..brakes do get some time to get used to, because of the load spreading device they have, but as you said, a little time is all that's required The torque band does take a bit of getting used too in the 2.8, as it is a tad higher than what you expect..my turbo cuts in just above 2100rpm and will give you a boot up the bum, like you wouldn't believe. Drive her like you hate her, but wanna fuck her anyway

Just to clarify things, I also drive a Jeep..a 2003 KJ, 2.5 CRD Limited, with all the goodies, which I love to bits, but when push comes to shove, I'd choose the Nissan for affordability....and reliability!!.

The probs with heads cracking and gasket issues all seem to be posted on the aussie forums. Over heating issues cause the problems. Now i know we would never get the temperatures here so tbh i dont thinl it would be much of a issue. Axels body box and everything else seems all ok with great reliability. The patrols hold their price well and are a lottle larger this would then turn ot purely from a fun weekender to a daily driver. I dont think id have as much fun with ot as i would be always thinking thos has got to get me to work . Move the kids around and be respectable.
The brakes yeah any new car just needs time to get used to currently running 4pots and well the car is alot lighter than the truck woild be. Ive read some good bits on changing the exhaust and a few other mods to make the patrol more drivable. But i wouldnt ever expect it to be a race car. Patrol does have some great points tbh. Would love one as a daily but dont think i can justify it.

A zj/wj 4.0 on gas fits the bill for me as a toy weekend warrior. The gas  just means it could be used a little morefor other jobs and outings. And id expect it to return 12-16 mpg on gas which seems ok to me. Happy that the jeeps dont suffer from tinworm engines good .electrics cant be worse than my old disco and then its just box and axel issues. But forums always highlight the best and worse which is why a good forum lets you know how it could go.

How bad are the axels and boxes dana 35

Cheers

Depending on how many kids you cart around, don't forget the Patrol comes in two sizes and they are both quite different to drive. Mine is the LWB 7 seater, but back home we have a couple of the 5 seat, shorter models which I drove a fair bit. My Patrol and the KJ both return around 30 mpg when driven properly. I spoke to some of my family last night about the head problems..they, like I, experience summer temps up around 40 degrees and have had no probs.

I agree with you about forums..you get all the good and all the bad stuff.

You make a very good point on having the patrol. A swb would be ok as its mainly just for me and the 2 boys. The girlies dont like the mud but a 7 seat is handy to cart the whole familly around. The seperate chassis alowing for a body lift is also good as well as after more forum trawling no other issues found. Not too common over here and that leads to mods being less common and harder to get. Just want a lift some mt 33's and possibly a snorkel. The more i read the harder it gets to pick a 4x4 tbh each has a weakness and a advantage. Im not really brand loyal anymore as that ends up costing you money by being blinded by loyalty and overlooking issues.

I'm like you with the brand loyalty thing..I've owned Lardies, Suzukis, Landcruisers, Nissans and Jeeps..there were good and bad points about every one of them as you would expect.

Good luck with whatever you choose mate.
