XJ spare wheel carrier test
« on: April 03, 2013, 10:39:17 PM »

We knocked up a spare wheel carrier on the XJ.
It's not even a prototype, since if it ever went into production, the framework wouldn't be anything like this one, it'd be much simpler and the tubes would be bent rather than cut & shut.
To use a douchebag term, it's mearley a "Proof of Concept"  :wsmile:

I wanted to see how much weight the rear quarter panel could take when the rose joints were bolted to them, how the tailgate catch would/could work, if it rattles when driving and if the wheel bounces about.

Anyway, it all works perfectly. No rattles and the wheel doesn't move at all. Really pleased with it.
We're tied up making bumpers right now (also get about 3 calls a week for a rear bumper, so that's next on the dev list), but I was wondering how much interest there would be in this type of thing if/when we get the time to develop it?

Cheers, Mike.

Can we hang a 35" Crawler on it and take it offroad  :003:

Just messing, looks good for stock size tyres. For bigger you'd have to go to a bumper mounted system or do some very clever framework inside the body of the Jeep. Seeing how desirable the stock swingaways can be I reckon you'll make some money with these.

It's larger than stock on there now (235/70-16), and I have hung a 33" on there. Seemed okay.
I put decent sized plates inside the quarter panel to help spread the load, same inside the tailgate.
The biggest issue with huge tyres would be covering up the rear lights/number plate. It'd need moving to a more central position and relocating the number plate further over.

Reckon if we ever did make them though, I'd definitely not recommend huge tyre sizes.

if you did an option on the Chief to hold a 35x13.50x15 then the wallet could be prised open

Leery of hanging that much weight on the bodywork, IMO. Even with some plating on the inside. All the 'proper' tyre carriers, including the XJ one, tie into the frame at some point, to carry the weight. Make the tyre bigger than stock, and it becomes not only mandatory to tie into the frame, but the only safe way of doing it.

I am surprised at how, much things, get ripped off when it goes shape of the pear tho.....

that vid that Jedi posted Jeep horror stories....
think it was a maroon JK that went greasy side up and the, rear carried just came away....
Whole vehicle was not well tho.......

Not saying that of your work tho.....no no no....... Just made me think of that Peice of footage

also didn't we have a Birty with spare bolted to the roof that went flying in an impact......

I have a OEM frame on my XJ, it mounts to the bumper hence if you look at parts lists there's 2 different options. Love mine, hate the thought of the boot clogged up with a tyre, it's space for more dogs 'n' guns  :icon_super:
