So recently I've found that under heavy wheeling especially in deep mud the Jeep has been getting rather warm, now as the Jeep is perfect under normal operation (actually a little cool) I knew it was lack of air flow (radiator fan). Currently I'm running 2 x 12" electric fans on a brand new 3 core competition ali rad. I started doing some research into radiator fans and their CFM ratings. What I found was that most (nearly all) aftermarket electric fans give bogus CFM ratings and that the only real way of knowing how good the fan is by seeing the amperage draw consumed (high amps = heavy duty motor/high flow motor). So as the US has done just about everything for Jeeps I checked to see what they do and the Ford Contour fan seems the ideal solution. So a little further research found that the Ford Contour is actually a Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 (late 90's early 00's) here in Europe. So I brought one off eBay for £15 complete with wiring (important). This gives you 2 fans/shroud and a 2 speed setup allowing for double temp settings and a slow start option to reduce current drawn on start up.



So I was a little skeptical as to how well the fit would be on the radiator but I was surprised at how well it actually fits, it really does fit like a genuine one would. (sorry no photo of this) I did a dummy fitment on my spare rad (same as the one in the Jeep) and apart from trimming a couple of plastic spurs off the shroud the fans fit perfect.

I then did a little research into the wiring of this setup and decided that this would be how I would wire the fans, this gives me 2 speeds, 2 different temperature settings and an override to kill the fans through deep water runs.



So by adding another another thermo switch and a couple of relays and toggle switch on the dash I think its all but ready for the final installment.

I'll keep you posted on the install and the future performance of this setup.

I see your using 2 temp sensors, did you know you can do it with one sensor, my cj runs 0ne sensor with 2 speeds, i can dig out the links if you need dude.

The reason for having 2 is security just in case one fails you always have a reserve, same with running dual fans. Keen to see the setup though

This is a link to the intermotor thermostatic temp switches that are available, the part no. and dual temperatures of the switches, when i did mine i welded a boss onto the thermostat housing, the thread in the boss is 22mm i think

Ive got mine wired for one 16 inch fan, but with 2 different temps on the dash switch, one for road and one for dirt, hope this is of some help to you.

That's a good setup however I like the ability to vary the temperature so I've gone for adjustable, I already had one from my previous setup so I just brought another, not expensive and easily wired up.

Ok, update for installation

Completed today, had done the wiring over the week so it was just removal of the radiator and original fans and replacement with the new fans and connect them up.

I forgot to take a picture of the fans pre installation on the radiator but 3 of the 4 mounts were in the exact same place my old fans connected to which made fitment a piece of cake, the 4th utilises one of the radiator fitment bolts so that was easy also. It's a tight fit, I found the easiest way was to loosen the fenders and the front grill supports and pull the grill forward to fit it in in one piece. Saying that I did trim a little off the original waterpump pulley bolts.

The fans require massive power so make sure you use good wire and connectors, as well as fused relays, I blew the 30 amp fuse for the high speed relay when I was trying to set the temperature activation. (had removed the fuse for the low speed and the fans kicked in on full and blew the fuse). Other than that they work really well and pull massive amounts of air. Will have to wait until it is used in anger to test properly but happy enough so far. Also which I had done this in the first place as it was a dam sight cheaper than 2 aftermarket fans setup I had before and took far less time to fit and get working properly.

What size are those fans? I am looking for cooling fans for my TJ, but only have 3"  clearance between the radiator and pulleys.

They must be about 11.5 - 12" in diameter, at 3" you may be pushing it but it should fit, if you Google (Ford Contour fan) and look for images, there is one there that has a detailed dimension of the unit.

I used same fans on my 360, first time i've been able to keep it cool for years, they are far more powerful than they look. i wired mine through a 70 amp relay and a pacet thermoswitch, with a 60 amp in line maxi fuse, worked awesome so far.

the fans you want are for the st220 or similar, if i remember the later years had a two stage fan installed, so if you double up on these you should have no cooling issues. just be wary of the ampage draw and the cable current rating

Thats the fans I've used Dave, yes great cooling but high amperage draw

now you had some time with this set up how did it work out? Improved?

Really good Ade, one of the best mods I've done. Runs all day at 80 deg C, even under pressure on at idle for ages . Never had the second speed kick in yet just the first stage and it cycles on/off quickly and efficiently. Also not an over the top noisy fan either.
