Cherokee TD
« on: March 24, 2006, 01:49:52 PM »

Hi all, this is my first post and I'm looking for advice already.

Bought a 1998 2.5td Cherokee, 74k on the clock, full dealer service history and in mint condition.

Picked it up 2 weeks ago and been very chuffed with it.

It has an oil leak at the front so I took it to the local garage that had carried out the last service. This is a well known garage in our area and has an excellent reputation.

They tell me it is a slight leak from the turbo seals and is quite normal in cars of this age. They say the leak is minimal and the car should be fine for a good few years. The garage owner says the oil may need topped every 3 months but nothing else.

Does this sound about right? I have no reason to doubt them but thought I'd check.

Sounds like a decent garage, most would tell you how much to fix it!

I'm sure someone that knows Cherrys will answer the "It's normal" bit...

It's normal for a TD to get a bit wet around the turbo and intercooler pipes, shouldn't be so bad as to be dripping on the floor though.

Tis leaking on the floor then!
Clean it up with some rags and then see how bad it is, if it's been leaking for a while, it will drip a little. A little oil goes a long way.
Run your hand down the pipes to the intercooler and check they haven't been rubbing, they're a bit prone to rubbing the pipes from the steering box. If they have got a split, you would be suffering loss of power. Usually any oil leaking from the turbo will go through the engine, but if it can find a way out it'll make a mess.

Thanks guys.

Spoe to the guy who owns the garage yesterday, he's impressed with the car and says it will give long reliable service. He says not to worry about the leak.

Well, just goes to show what a mechanical genius I am.....not.

Leak persisted and was getting curious as it wasn't leaving a mark on the monoblock, it was drying in.

Had a good look over a week or so and finally deduced it was coolant!! So off we went to Aviemore(me, wife and sprog) for a weeks holiday and 5 litres of coolant/water in the boot, just in case.

Comes back and books it in to the garage............1 new radiator and £234, pick it back up tomorrow. It's only been away a day and I've really missed it.

Now what will I pretend to look knowledgably at under the bonnet?
