Just my 10p worth.... if you're going to put a battery inside the car, it needs to be a sealed type, preferably gel battery or fitted in a proper sealed and vented box.
make sure you are not losing the extra power in the big battery by extending the leads
Big FO cables needed, I'm going 70mm2 for mid mounted batteries to the front of an XJ
How about running 2 batteries on a split charger, with the boot one just for the camping stuff?
Considering what he's said he wants to do with he additional battery, split charge is the ONLY way to go. At least it'll ensure he'll be starting the thing after a weekend in the boonies.If done properly,it'll work fine. He doesn't appear to be a winch monkey, so I can't see where the problem lies.
