I guess it's the same as my XJ-. The black canister is a charcoal canister for fuel vapour.. the solenoid opens to release these vapours into the intake manifold from time to time. All computer controlled for emissions and fuel economy!

Check for leaks or holes in the vacuum system. I had a hole in a 90deg connector to the intake manifold where it contacted a hose going to the heater matrix. Years of vibrations must have worn the hole in it and when it got really hot under the bonnet the engine would get really lumpy and misfire. Not 100% sure this was the total cause but can't have helped.

Is it when the engine is hot? Not necessarily coolant temp but hot under the bonnet? Is it a 98 model? I have read stuff about heat soak causing injectors 3 & 4 vaporising fuel. BUT this may be internet BS, I was searching for answers when mine was being awkward and I'm not 100% it's sorted now - have been concentrating on other stuff lately.
